Highlights from the J Class Barcelona Regatta. www.jclassyachts.com This reinforced the renewed interest among owners to build J Class yachts.

To keep the J Class fleet and races alive and to encourage new build yachts to enter the field, new Class rules were established for the construction of Replica Rebuilds from original plans. One of the key drivers of the J Class revival was the decision of the J Class Association (JCA) to allow aluminium and other materials to be used as a hull construction material. After a performance analysis by Gerard Dijkstra of the existing J’s as well as the designs that were allowed to be built under the new JCA rules, a specific J Class handicap system was developed in order to enable all yachts built to the J Class designs to race against each other regardless of size, sail area or hull construction. The new rule is a VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) based rating system which puts limits to the performance. The aim of the JCA and the rule is to bring fair & close racing to the fleet and to give all designs a chance of winning on a handicap based system.

As the showcase Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez officiel concluded today in beautiful racing conditions, Svea maintained their remarkable winning record, winning the J Class to remain unbeaten at every regatta that they have raced since the powerful Tore Holm design moved to Swedish ownership in 2022.

🏆 But they had to work extra hard to retain the J Class’s premier trophy, the Corinthian King’s Cup, triumphing only on tie break against newcomers to the class this year, Peter Harrison’s Rainbow.

In perfect conditions, 10-12 knots of breeze and a pleasant, warm Autumn sunshine, Italian Giovanni Lombardi Stronati steered his recently acquired Hanuman to win the prestigious annual regatta’s final race.

Lack of wind prevents J Class racing at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez officiel, but a ch*****ne finale is on the cards

Today the three teams on Svea, Rainbow and Hanuman waited patiently in the intermittent drizzle but by 1400hrs local time it became obvious there was going to be no significant improvement and racing was cancelled.

While the crews were all disappointed not to be able to resume their regatta after Wednesday’s statutory lay day, the forecast for Friday and Saturday is quite promising and should allow the current schedule of two windward-leeward races tomorrow and one on Saturday to be completed.
