Mallorca is taking strong and effective measures against unwanted tourist behavior. Very important as we are and will be staying the safest place in the Med.....to live and to enjoy your holiday. Welcome 🙏

The Government has ordered this Wednesday the closure of all the commerce, leisure and restaurant establishments of two streets of Arenal (the so-called streets “de la Cerveza” and “del Jamón”) and Punta Ballena in Magaluf to avoid uninvited tourism and its possible effects on the pandemic.

"We do not want uninvited tourists on our islands, that they do not come," the minister for Economic Model, Tourism and Work, Iago Negueruela, asked at a press conference, in which he explained that the ban comes into force as soon as it is published. the resolution of the Minister of Health, Patricia Gómez in the BOIB.

Negueruela has specified that the closure of the premises must be "immediate". And that the controls of the Govern to supervise that the new measures are complied with will begin this Thursday. The closure will be temporary and can be extended.

Negueruela, the Minister of Public Administrations and Modernization, Isabel Castro, and the General Director of Tourism, Rosana Morillo, met this Wednesday with representatives of the CAEB and PIMEB employers and the CCOO and UGT. The purpose of this meeting is to analyze the situation derived from the crowds that occurred in certain tourist areas of the Balearic Islands in recent days.

The areas affected by the restriction are the same in Mallorca where the decree against excess tourism in force since the beginning of this year was applied. Specifically, the closure of stores is on Miquel Pellisa and Bartomeu Salvà streets in Playa de Palma (those for Beer and Ham) and Punta Ballena, in Magaluf.

Other prohibitions and restrictions in the field of nightlife in the Balearic Islands

The resolution establishes three other measures: long straws and containers of alcoholic beverages of more than 0.5 liters are prohibited throughout the Balearic Islands. In addition, high tables with stools are prohibited in excess tourism areas (Magaluf, Playa de Palma, in Mallorca, and the West End of Sant Antoni, in Ibiza).

In the case of the prohibition of the use of long straws- "that have been seen in images this weekend," said Negueruela- the Government has adopted it because they favor the shared use of alcoholic beverages. Shared drinking glasses with a capacity of more than 0.5 liters are prohibited, also because "they are containers that favor the shared use of alcoholic beverages".

In addition, in the areas of the excess decree, the Government has decreed the prohibition of using high tables with stools "because they encourage the client to stand and use the tables as a meeting place and in no way respect the distance of security ”, explained Negueruela. The intention is that the locals use traditional, low tables and chairs.

The Minister has ensured that the measures have been agreed with the social partners "to ensure the entire economy." "All the measures we adopt will be aimed at protecting citizens and workers," he added.

"Do not come, because they will not be able to do what they considered could be done"

"Do not come, because they will not be able to do what they considered could be done on the islands," he insisted on excess tourism. And he stressed that "a few cannot harm the image" of the Islands.

The Minister has stressed that the attitudes detected in recent days are "punctual" but harm the Balearic Islands, when it is "the safest destination in Europe". "It is a very focused attitude and we will not tolerate it under any circumstances," he added.

"We have an extraordinary health situation in which we cannot afford it," said Negueruela. He added that the Government "will not shake the pulse" if it has to extend the measures adopted this Wednesday to other areas.

The recommendation of the Govern is "that this type of tourism should not come, because it will not be possible and the people who do it will be persecuted".

"We will not allow this lack of control," said Negueruela. He stressed that these new measures are "one more step", since he recalled that in the areas of the excess tourism decree they could only open the terraces of the leisure venues. It was forbidden to open the premises with capacities greater than 300 people, as determined by the decree on control measures for the pandemic of June 19.

Greater police control announced in Magaluf and Playa de Palma

Counselor Castro has explained that breaches of these new measures can imply sanctions of up to 600,000 euros, for very serious ones.

She has announced that the Government is going to increase control in these areas with more troops and has also requested a reinforcement of the presence of Security Forces and Bodies to the Government Delegation. According to Negueruela, public spaces will also be controlled, in relation to the beaches near these streets.

"We cannot afford to step back and endanger everyone's health," Castro has insisted. The number of troops is going to be reinforced and from this weekend compliance with these new measures will be controlled, she stressed.
