And so finally we put one of the Stars from the Star Sailors League in the water in Valencia.
I was looking over to the three Stars parked ashore, kind of perplexed, than we launched and the old lady shined in all her magic. Sailing pure the noise of the water against the hull, immediately heeled. It was kind of mooving to see that sailing, the sailing we loved to max. The Star is still alive, she has a magic that no other sailing can and will never have. It is a timeless emotion that has engaged champions from the past and sailors of today. My mind goes back to the Star euros in the early 70 s in Brenzone... the US build Liz Star with the clear balsa core, the Euros in Torbole and Mankin there with his Red Star, my racing against Torben Grael, the beauty of racing Stars in 35 knots in Laredo, and all at the club felt the same, the A class cat sailors looking at the magic, one argentinian that was working on a Tp52 asking please to be allowed to go sailing. Victor Gorostegui whose father sailed many regattas with legenday Tonio, double world champion, then with Josele Doreste... Then i thought back at the last two years and more, the mixture of economical interests, marketing dreams and lack of knowledge, the deep knowledge of the sport that goes back in our fantastic history, from Straulino to Lowell North, to Buddy Melges, to Percy, Loof. Grael and Scheidt. We cannot let anyone take away the soul of our sport, sailors stand up and help me defend what we all love, we owe it to real sailing.
