A British luxury retail institution dating back to 1831 is fighting for its future.

Harvey Nichols has reportedly warned that, without a rescue deal, new funding or a buyer, it could cease trading within 12 months.

The business is up for sale, negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage, and Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group has been reported as a frontrunner.

Think about that for a moment…

Nearly 200 years of history — and even an internationally recognised luxury brand isn’t immune to today’s economic pressures.

High operating costs. Changing consumer habits. Online competition. Pressure on margins. A difficult UK retail environment.

🚨 ONE OF CYCLING’S BIGGEST GROUPS HAS RUN OUT OF FINANCIAL ROAD. 🚴‍♂️📉

Accell Group — the Dutch cycling giant behind Raleigh, Lapierre, Haibike, Ghost, Batavus and 11 other brands — has been granted a suspension of payments by a Dutch court, giving the business court-supervised breathing space to restructure.

Its UK & Ireland subsidiary, which houses Raleigh, has also reportedly filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.

The numbers tell an extraordinary story:

💰 €1.8 BILLION KKR-led buyout in 2022
📉 Debt reportedly reduced from around €1.4bn to €800m in a 2024 restructuring
🔄 A further restructuring followed in February 2026, when control passed to super-senior lenders in exchange for fresh funding
👥 Headcount has fallen from 3,500+ to around 2,000 employees across 15 countries
🇬🇧 Raleigh itself reportedly recorded approximately €30m in losses in its latest released accounts.

The group expanded around expectations created during the pandemic cycling boom — but the anticipated level of sustained demand failed to materialise.

After two major debt restructurings in less than two years, the financial pressure has now reached another critical point.

For the cycling industry, the question becomes what happens next to some of its most recognisable names: Raleigh, Lapierre, Haibike, Ghost, Batavus and the wider Accell portfolio.

Which brands survive intact? Which are sold? And what does another major restructuring mean for dealers, distributors and the wider bicycle industry?

Another reminder that turnover, scale and famous brands alone don’t guarantee financial resilience.
