Paragliding vs. Parasailing – What's the Difference?

Many people confuse paragliding with parasailing, but they are two completely different activities.

Paragliding is a true form of free flight. The pilot launches from a hill or mountain using only the wind and a specially designed paraglider wing. There is no engine and no boat. By using rising air currents (thermals), a paraglider can climb hundreds or even thousands of meters and stay in the air for hours. It's the closest feeling to flying like a bird.

Parasailing, on the other hand, is a water sport. The passenger is attached to a parachute that is pulled by a speedboat. The boat provides all the power, and the parachute cannot fly independently. Once the boat slows down, the parasail descends back to the boat or the beach. In most locations, parasailing flights reach around 50 meters (160 ft) above the water, depending on local regulations and equipment.

Why many people prefer paragliding
🪂 Real free flight – no engine, no boat, just you and the wind.
⛰️ Much higher flights – often several hundred meters above the landscape, with mountain flights reaching well over 1,000 meters above the takeoff.
⏱️ Longer experience – flights can last from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on conditions.
🌍 Spectacular scenery – fly over mountains, volcanoes, cliffs, valleys, and coastlines.
🦅 A true flying experience – instead of being towed, you are actually soaring through the sky.
