Look at what a dope card actually holds.
Distance, which you already knew. Elevation, which is the output. Wind hold, which is the output. Hit or miss.

Every one of those is an answer, and the question is somewhere else.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Temperature, pressure and humidity, which determine its density. Wind speed and direction where you were lying, not just what the flags were doing downrange. What time it was, because the conditions at eleven in the morning may not be the conditions you had at seven.

None of that is on most cards.

So when the same dope fails you six weeks later, you have no way of knowing whether the load drifted, the r***e changed, or the air simply was not the same air.

Which means the most useful thing in your bag may not be a better solver.
𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭.
Two columns is enough to start.

Next to every string, write the temperature and the wind you measured at the firing point. Not the forecast. What your own instrument said, where you were lying.

Two numbers. Five seconds.
After a season, you can do something you cannot do now.

You can pull every entry near 10°C and see whether your dope was consistent. You can find the day it wasn't and check what the air was doing that morning. You can stop guessing which variable moved.

But a pencil works.
The point is the record, not the method.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁.

Everyone reads the terrain. Leaves rustling, twigs moving, dust lifting, the far treeline starting to bend. It's the oldest wind call there is, and it works.

But there is something worth knowing about the numbers behind those observations.

The Beaufort scale describes wind using what you can see happening around you. And the wind speeds associated with it are based on measurements at 10 meters above the ground.

The Royal Meteorological Society points out that at just two meters, wind speed may be only 50 to 70 percent of the figure measured at ten.

You're lying considerably lower than that.

So when the trees tell you Force 4, they are giving you useful information. Dust is lifting. Small branches are moving. The corresponding Beaufort range is 13 to 18 mph.

But that does not mean 13 to 18 mph is crossing your muzzle.
And that distinction matters at 600 yards.

So use the trees for what they're actually good at.

𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Watch which way the tops are moving. Watch the grass. Watch what different parts of the terrain are doing.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. When the treeline starts behaving differently, something changed. That's information you can use before it reaches you.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁. Trees, grass, dust, mirage and flags let you build a picture of what the wind is doing across the entire path to the target.

What they cannot tell you precisely is the wind speed at your firing position.
That's a different measurement.

When you call wind, what do you trust first: TREES, GRASS, MIRAGE or FLAGS?

Everybody quotes density altitude. Fewer people can tell you what it actually means.

It is not a place.

It is a way of describing how dense the air actually is, right where you are, right now; expressed as the altitude where that same air density would occur in a standard atmosphere.

Your ground elevation does not move.
Your density altitude does.

Temperature changes. Pressure changes. Humidity changes. Put them together and the air your bullet is travelling through can behave like air hundreds, sometimes thousands, of meters above or below the ground you are standing on.

Take Zaragoza.

The ground may be roughly 200 metres above sea level, but on a hot August afternoon the density altitude can be dramatically higher. You are still standing at the same elevation. The air is not behaving like it.

That is the number your bullet cares about.

Higher density altitude means thinner air. Thinner air means less aerodynamic drag, which changes velocity retention, drop and wind deflection downrange.

Your ballistic app can calculate for that, if the atmospheric numbers going into it describe the air where you actually are.

Pull temperature, pressure and humidity from a weather station somewhere else and you are solving for somebody else's atmosphere.

On flat ground with a station nearby, the difference may be insignificant.

On a hot valley floor, a cold ridge at first light, or terrain where one face has been heating in the sun while another has not, it may not be.

That is what the WeatherDot changes.

Eight matches. Seven states. One weekend.

GAP Late Summer at Pleasant Hill. West Branch running the Midwest Qualifier at Princeton. Indiana PRC at Butlerville. MPA-GA at Swainsboro. Recon at Rose. LRSA all the way up in Talkeetna.

Sunday the Northeast Regional Finale goes off at Tremont, and Recon runs its rimfire day.

Talkeetna is in the fifties Saturday. Swainsboro is in the low nineties. Those two ranges sit 28 feet apart in elevation and more than two thousand feet apart in density altitude, on temperature alone.

Different air everywhere, and you can only put a number on the part you are lying in.

At 600 in a 10 mph full value, a 6.5 Creedmoor 140 ELD-M gets pushed 15.6 inches. Call it 5 mph wrong and you just handed back 8 inches nobody gives you a second shot at.

None of that changes if the only thing on the line Saturday is your own group at the club.

Twenty stages. Ten rounds each. Cheney, Washington, Saturday and Sunday.

Two hundred rounds is a lot of chances to make the same mistake twice, and the one most people repeat is trusting a wind call that worked on stage four.

Farm Out Range in mid August is dry and open, without much to slow the air once it starts moving across the property. A stage running four miles an hour at eight in the morning can be running nine by two in the afternoon. At 600 with a 140 grain that swing is about eight inches, which is a center hit becoming an edge.

Elevation you solve once. Wind you solve every stage.

The meter tells you what's happening where you're standing. That's the honest limit of it, and anybody telling you different is selling something.

At 600 yards you've got roughly half a second of flight and a lot of country in between. The wind at your position, the wind at the midpoint and the wind at the target can be three different things, and the middle one usually matters most. That's where the bullet spends its time.

So the meter isn't the answer. It's the anchor.

You measure what can actually be measured, which is your own position, exactly, in about two seconds. Then you read the terrain, the mirage and the grass between you and the plate, and you scale off a number you know instead of guessing from zero.

Two people can look at the same mirage and disagree by 4 mph. Neither of them is being dense. They just don't have an anchor.

Big weekend.

NRL Hunter Grand Slam kicks off today in Clovis. Tomorrow the PRS Pro series runs two matches on the same day, Manners Mayhem at Pleasant Hill, Missouri and the Peterson Cartridge Challenge at Kennerdell, Pennsylvania. Different terrain, different wind problem, same scoreboard.

Missouri in August will hand you humidity and soft, shifting wind that changes character every hour. Kennerdell is Pennsylvania hill country, which means terrain driven wind doing whatever the ridge tells it to do.

Clovis sits at around 4,200 feet on the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado, which is a polite way of saying there is nothing between you and the wind for a very long way.

NRL Hunter Grand Slam is there Friday. If you have never shot the format, it is unknown distance, positional, over natural terrain, with scoring that rewards a first round hit far more than a corrected second one. There is no walking the trace onto the target and calling it a hit.

Elevation you can solve at the truck. Wind stays live right up until the shot breaks, and out there it can be doing two entirely different things between your position and a target 600 yards away.

Measure at your position, then read the terrain between. It is a two step problem and most people only do the second half.

Match weekend. Buckskin Hills, TAP at Moffat, and LRSA up at Kenai on Saturday. Anderson Outlaw and MDPRS Match 8 on Sunday.

If you are shooting one of them, the first stage is going to tell you how honest you were being about your wind call.

Worth saying for anyone running a solver off phone weather. The wind number is the one variable that does not travel. Pressure, temperature, and humidity change slowly across a valley, so pulling them from the nearest station is fine and that is exactly what Anemotracker does. Wind changes across a single berm. That one you have to take where you are standing.

We have had enough emails about the Mini AB that it is worth putting the whole answer in one place.

The Ultrasonic Portable Mini AB (CMI1061) is out of production. It was the one wind meter in our range that talked natively to Applied Ballistics devices. 43 mm across, 47 mm tall, 78 grams. Four ultrasonic transducers and no bearings, so there was nothing to spin up, wear out, or freeze. Wind speed from 1.12 to 100 mph, direction across the full 360, IPX8, around 150 hours of runtime on a charge, and it charged on a Qi pad.

We are not releasing a successor to it, and we are not going to call something else a replacement when it is not.

Here is the part that matters if you own one.

Firmware still updates over Bluetooth through Anemotracker. Manuals and datasheets stay published on the site. The tripod adapter, the mast mount, and the phone mount stay in the catalog. Support requests still get a human answer.

The Mini AB pairs with Applied Ballistics devices. It does not pair with other manufacturers' handhelds, and there is no firmware update coming that changes it. Worth knowing before you buy one, new or secondhand.
