The use of nonlinear coaching methods like representative practice design, the constraints-led approach and generally ourcome-driven methodologies are becoming more and more common.
It is simple, not easy and as it may look very chaotic at first, the self-organizing kicks in when we encourage it.
In this video weâll walk you through on How to use nonlinear pedagogy in coaching and how it accelerates skill development and helps to transfer from practice to reality.
Yours truly,

Todayâs work with awesome group of people. Weapon retention/disarm, two sides of the same coin when trained with that attitude and then spicing up with some airsoft to teach the stupid should hurt lessons. Never the real thing but trying to make it as close as possible.

Happy Sunday everyone from FIMA & Krav Maga Finland!
Todayâs video is about building situational, representative, exercises with pads using the visual feedback as the punch to âchooseâ.
The less expertize the trainee has, the more important it is to use this type of external task/feedback methodology.
The more experience one has, the harder tasks (e.g., pads hitting back) we must create.
Safe failing is the key element in getting more skillful, so let that happen and focus attention by itđ

This is goldenđ
I find it amazing (a bit) that in practically all techniques in krav maga, one just needs to understand a situation;
đ„ oneâs mindset at the moment
đ„ Oneâs body position at the moment
đ„ Opponentâs behavior offering the âopportunities to operateâ the best at the time (âaffordancesâ)
đ„ Emotions, startling, adrenaline-rushâŠ
All that drive the natural reaction.
Then the principles like
- the fastest way, is the best way
- closest weapon to closest target
- minimum /maximum (binding two above together)
- donât get hurt (or hit)âŠbut if you do keep on fighting putting the outcome as priority..
Once I started to understand this, didnât have to ârememberâ any movements, just think about the situational factors listed above, make s training exercise out of them and then playđ
Now this may not play well with the âfocus on the mechanicsâ learning but it fits right in with the outcome focused learning.
People remember stories, so letâs create small tales. (Some call this scenarios). As stories have different diversions, changing one part will make a twist but as long as the main idea of the outcome (âthe principleâ) stays the same, so will the practice.
Theoretical principles vs Practical use in Krav Maga
At the beginning of Krav Maga there was no system in the modern sense
There was a person
Imi Lichtenfeld zâl
What shaped Krav Maga was not theory
It was a personal experience
Violent anti Semitic streets in Europe
Service in military and underground forces
And years of training in wrestling boxing and jiu jitsu
But his experience did not exist in isolation
It was built on others
His father Samuel Lichtenfeld
A police detective in Bratislava
Who exposed him early to violence law enforcement needs and physical training
And later
The collective experience of Jewish fighting instructors who taught before him and along side with him before the establishment of the Israeli state.
What was taught then had different names but all aimed
for a reality driven approach
This is where Krav Maga was shaped
Not as an idea
But as an evolution
From many experiences
Tested in real conditions
From that reality techniques were adopted/formed
From those techniques patterns were recognized
And only then did principles begin to take shape
This is the key point
Krav Maga did not begin as a collection of ideas
It began as a response to real violence
Which raises a question for us today
Are we still building a system driven from reality?
Or are we building from explanations of principles?
Because if the foundation changes
The system changes with it
Principles should grow from experience
Not replace it
Krav Maga is not built on theory
It is built on what survived reality

Good Friday people!
This time weâll focus on two important factors of self-defense situations:
1. In every defensive action we must take away the opponentâs balance. Physical and mental.
2. How to make the OODA loop play in our favor as we overwhelm the opponentâs observation and never let them past the orientation.
In the defensive techniques this means CONTACT.
It also means that we need to learn to read the feedback, i.e., what our actions are causing and how to âalways be closingâ (like any good salespersonđ)
Creating exercises like this is every instructorâs job, since training realistically means that the attackerâs do move and react.
Stay safe and savageđȘđ

Good Wednesday from FIMA Finland!
This time thinking about the skill of adapting.
Adapt, you must..BUT FIRST HONE THE FUNDAMENTALSâŠ
Anyone else finding the controversy in this? First train something that changes immediately once there is a responsive opponent.
According to the principle âfastest way is the best way,
Wouldnât the fastest way in learning be:
đ„Demonstrating the problem that needs to be solved (and no, it is not a single punch or kick but attackerâs behavior)
đ„Discussing and figuring out the best outcomes
đ„Setting up a task-orientated exercise
đ„ Giving an exertal-orientated cue (âstrike like a snakeâ)
đ„ Let the âkidsâ play and watch what happens
đ„ During the play:
# Help everyone to maintain the focus of attention,
# Use smart constraints,
# Celebrate and empower successes
# Enciurageto try new things
# Suggest movement solutions (re-cue and re-focus the attention)
đ„Debrief
# Demonstrate what you saw happening
# What technical solutions came up in different situations
# Use directed visualization aka âshadow boxingâ(close your eyes, go back to the game, respond to the opponentâs actions)
Take a leap to the live side.
Watch the video and tune to the channel to get new ideas to teach the fundamentals.
Experience to understand.

Good Tuesday from FIMA Finland & Kravmagacoach weekly training tip!
This week weâll look at a situation in which the ambush comes from the front with only a second or so to rise to the level.
Training for this kind of âsettingâ has many layers, the most important one being the focus of attention: lions donât blockđ
The baseline is to use the task-orientated-training, focus on repeating the outcome.
During training everyone gets instant feedback from success and failure.
Coachâs job is to the adjust the cues and constraints, simplify or complicate to fine-tune the exercise.
All level of trainees can train together!

Hi everyone!
This is the long-form video on the exercise of the headlock defense with the attackerâs intention to slam the target-person down and continue beating there.
We have discovered that focusing on the instant attack rather than thinking about the release mechanics Produces better outcome.
Also setting the scene so that we understand (and especially when we play the attacker) the attackerâs intention, the training session becomes a lot better.
Weâve been using this training methodology (ecological dynamics, CLA, Representative practice design, scenario-based learning and nonlinear pedagogy in general) now systematically since 2019 and found so far that the learning results are amazing compared to the past 20 years. For instructors more challenging but also more rewarding.
Learning the adapt is a natural part of every session.
If you want to learn more about our experiences and findings, do contact directly.

Hi everyone!
One thing that is generally missing from self-defense training is establishing the attackerâs intention and actually practising that before jumping on to the solution. SO READING THE QUESTION FIRSTđđ
By doing so we can focus on the possible answers better.
It will be easier to point out the âkey success factorsâ of surviving aka âthe principlesâ and repeat those.
Hereâs the short version of the longer exercise video coming up later on with the attacker intention of throwing/slamming the target person to the ground with a side headlock.
Enjoy the show, subscribe to the channel and most importantly TRY OUT THE TRAINING APPROACH.
