URBANSTORY FITTING ROOM: A private place for collective activism, art and more... This spring urbanstory fitting room is heading towards a new phase. Stay tuned!
After a modest renovation work fitting room is ready again to welcome customers and store visitors to encounter the diverse and often critical issues presented on it's walls. This time it will happen in the form of art. On the fitting room walls so far we´ve had changing statements and arguments about current issues considering ethical, economical, ecological, social and cultural questions. We've
also highlighted the ideologies behind brands urbanstory represents (Osklen, Veja, Patagonia) and the activism pursued by these companies in their own operating environment and around the globe. Starting from 2nd of April we shall give this space to artists who will continue the previous work by presenting diverse and thought-provoking art on the fitting room walls. These ecxhibitions will go on for five months, ending in August 2013. Each artist will have the space for two weeks and the medias used will range from photography to painting and serigraphy, to sound-art and performance. While the topic itself is not restricted into anything too specific, each artist must make their interpretations on how to work with a store environment and a space that is also literally used as a fitting room. We are hoping to see site-specific works, art as a form of activism and themes to do with urban life to name but a few. The core idea of the world's perhaps first activist fitting room is still there; we want to encourage every visitor to participate, to think critically and to act for collectively important issues. We hope that the thought's provoked in the fitting room at the intimate moment of choosing something for oneself can solely be the moment for more wide-perspective and long-term decision-making as well. Urbanstory fitting room evolves around three main goals:
1) Acting as a counter-power to the merely outlook-centred commercialism and mainstream brand imperialism.
2) Connecting people with diverse backgrounds and spheres as well as different generations in ways that support ethical and sustainable decision-making.
3) Taking action beyond the taken-for-granted borderlines and biases by doing concrete good in different projects. Urbanstory fitting room is located in the heart of Helsinki inside urbanstory; a unique conceptstore mixing ethical design, creative ideas and art, new kind of business and collective activism. urbanstory fitting room @ urbanstory
