A couple of months after the Roosters women won the Finnish Championship, the 2016 Roosters men’s team claimed their own title in an unforgettable championship battle against the Crocodiles.

Played in one of the rainiest days Helsinki had seen in years, the championship game turned into a physical, run-heavy battle where both teams had to fight the conditions as much as each other. In the end, the Roosters came out on top 10-0.

They also wanted to recognize the season’s All-Stars, whose performances set the standard week after week: Iiro Luoto, Jere Lahti, Sampo Vehkomäki, Curtis Slater, Jaycen Taylor and Aleksi Aitala.

The players wanted to give special recognition to the team’s American imports Jaycen Taylor, Micah Brown, Jabari Harris, Curtis Slater and Bernard Luster whose talent, leadership and commitment played a huge role throughout the championship season.

The coaches deserve their own recognition. HC Juha Hakala and OC Mikko Koikkalainen were instrumental in building a championship team and preparing the players to succeed when it mattered most.

Finally, the players wanted to remember the heart of the team, Leena Vehkomäki. Her kindness, dedication and support meant everything to this group, and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.❤️

Players also highlighted staff member Olli Jussila, in charge of strength and conditioning, who according to players taught grown men how to run.

A special shoutout also goes to the members of that championship team who are still playing today: Jabari Harris, Tuukka Hämäläinen, Karri Pajarinen, Samuli Vehkomäki. Also the water boy who is now a player in the men’s team Santtu Vehkomäki deserves a shoutout.

Another history look, this time into the women’s championship in 2016!

The Roosters reclaimed the Finnish Championship with a 26–0 victory over the Turku Trojans in the Naisten Vaahteraliiga final.

Season MVPs were QB Sanna Järvinen (first picture) and MLB Tea Törmänen (second picture), but players remember 2016 as a true team effort. The squad was physical, strong, and committed, believing they could overpower any opponent after putting a huge emphasis on strength training.

Players also credit the coaching staff especially Heli Harjanne and Anni Kivikataja whose dedication left a lasting impression, while Jarmo Lahti turned the offensive line into a dominant force.

Today we look back at the Roosters’ 1996 championship team.

Two standout players from that season were Kimmo Eloranta (“Mega”) and Ville Huittinen (“Darryll”), who both played key roles in the team’s success.

In Maple Bowl XVII, the Roosters faced the East City Giants in a thrilling championship game. The Roosters won 23–22, taking the lead with just 10 seconds remaining when RB Timo Blomqvist scored the game-winning touchdown.

A championship team, memorable personalities, and one of the most nerve racking finishes in Roosters history.
