Behind every Suunto product is a global community of passionate testers helping shape the future of adventure.

As Suunto’s Field Test Manager, Marc Whittaker works with athletes and outdoor enthusiasts around the world to test new products and features before they reach your wrist. From mountain trails to open water, real-world experiences help ensure every product is ready for adventure.

”Sometimes it doesn’t feel like work. I’m constantly talking with people about sports, and that’s something I genuinely enjoy,” says Marc.

”What works for one person may not work for another. That process of learning and discovery is something I find endlessly interesting.”

As part of the research behind the From Depths to Heights Archive Exhibition, Werneri from sat down with Marc to discuss testing, continuous learning, and why staying connected to real outdoor experiences matters more than ever.

Suunto’s data analysts took a close look at over 139,000 marathon runners in our database and found some interesting insights:

1. Half of marathon runners finish between 3:00 and 4:30. The largest group (20%) finishes between 3:30 and 4:00.

2. Sub-3 runners average 56 km per week in the three-month build-up to their marathon – more than double the 25–26 km logged by runners finishing in over 4,5 hours.

3. In the faster performance groups, higher training volume is strongly associated with faster marathon times.

4. Among runners finishing in over 4,5 hours, weekly volume is nearly identical in all segments.

5. How often you run appears to matter more than how long each run is. Most groups average 13–14 km per run.

6. Cross-training volume doesn’t explain the differences. All groups average roughly 2 hours of other activities per week.

The biggest difference between marathon finish times isn’t how long individual runs are. It’s how consistently runners train week after week.

If your boss is still rocking this, you probably won’t be replaced by AI.

Because anyone who refuses to replace perfectly working technology probably isn’t rushing to replace people either.

Fun fact: there are still loads of Ambits out there recording adventures every single month. 🙌
