Polar express in Ruka🌝

Here are my favourite things to do in Ruka in winter:

1. Ride the Ruka Coaster🎢
A 767-metre alpine coaster through the snowy landscape. You’ll love this!

2. Go on a husky safari 🐕
One of those classic Lapland experiences. You can choose anything from a short ride to a longer husky adventure through the snowy forest. Eräsusi Husky Farm is my favourite!

3. Visit a reindeer farm 🦌
Join the morning programme at Kujala Reindeer Farm. This is hands down one of the best reindeer experiences you can have in the Ruka area.

4. Explore Oulanka National Park 🌲
Winter transforms Oulanka into a completely different landscape. The frozen rapids are absolutely breathtaking.

5. Try night skiing 🌙🎿
Ruka offers night skiing during the winter season, which is such a fun way to experience the slopes after dark. During the polar night, it gets really dark making the experience even more special!

6. Enjoy a Finnish sauna & cold plunge 🧖🏼‍♀️
Rukatonttu sauna & cold plunge is a must! Warm up in the sauna, take a dip in the icy water and repeat. The perfect Finnish winter experience.

Glass igloos are one of the most iconic experiences in Finnish Lapland and there are so many options to choose from, including Syöte Igloos (shown here). You can find glass-roofed stays in several Lapland destinations, each offering a slightly different setting and experience.

My tip is that you usually don’t need to stay for long. One night is often enough to tick it off your Lapland bucket list, especially since glass igloos can be quite expensive. This makes it an easy experience to add to your itinerary alongside other Arctic adventures.

For the rest of your stay, I highly recommend renting a traditional Finnish cabin🪵 It’s a more affordable way to experience the cozy side of Lapland, with your own sauna, kitchen and space to relax after a day outdoors.
