Aavameri - Sea Kayaking, Finnish Archipelago Sea

August usually brings lighter winds and a slower rhythm to nature in Finland’s Archipelago Sea. This year, however, the winds have kept us on our toes with an unusually high number of breezy days.

But finally, the archipelago has settled down. We’ve been enjoying calm, relaxing conditions on our guided day tours and, just as importantly, some beautiful weather for our self-guided paddlers exploring the islands on their own.

These are the August days we love the: calm seas, quiet islands, and that unmistakable feeling of summer slowly beginning to wind down towards autumn, an ad lovely but different season in the Finnish archipelago.

Over the past two days, our guide Iita has been out on a bespoke two-day expedition with a lovely family. Benjamin has led two international groups on day tours, Johan has helped another family set off on a 14-day self-guided expedition, and our Head of Operations and Barking, Joppe, has taken two very lazy days off (management is exhausting).

Yesterday we helped a couple start their journey south with a safety course, route planning help, Aavameri’s kayaks and equipment.

This is what sea kayaking here is all about: moving slowly between the islands, finding your own rhythm, sleeping close to the sea, and waking up surrounded by rock, sand, pine trees and open water.
