Day 1 Highlights – Oceania Invitational Boxing Championships, Samoa

Seven of Fiji’s 10 boxers stepped into the ring today, delivering strong results and gaining valuable lessons for their future development.

Youth Female 65kg – Merewalesi Kolitapa, who normally competes at 60kg, boxed beautifully against New Zealand champion Brooke Miller. Despite Miller’s height and reach advantage, Merewalesi applied stylish aggression to secure a split-decision victory.

Youth Female 80+kg – Ana Naikanivalu lost her match bout against Kealey Perez, a gold medallist at the Youth Futures Cup. Ana has already secured gold in the Youth Female 80kg division at this tournament. However, she agreed to face Perez and will take on Youth Futures Cup silver medallist Francis Taafaki tomorrow to gain valuable ring experience, which is scarce in Fiji for her weight class. Both her opponents are heavier than Ana’s weight class.

Youth Male 60kg – Geoffrey Titifanua earned a split-decision victory over current Oceania gold medallist Johnsal Semi of Samoa. Having lost to Semi twice before, Geoffrey’s composed performance made this a particularly significant and hard-fought win.

Youth Male 65kg – Norman Amram lost a closely contested split decision to Samoa’s Douglas Pati. The bout should have gone our way but still provided valuable lessons as Norman prepares for the Youth Olympics later this year.

Elite Male 70kg – Elijah Qiokata secured a hard-fought split-decision victory over Tavita Kaoma of Kiribati. The narrow result reflected the intensity of the contest, with both fighters competing valiantly until the final bell.

Elite Female 57kg – Jasmine Daunakamakama maintained her strong form against Australian champion Abbie May McTeare. The power of Jasmine’s punches proved decisive in her unanimous-decision victory.

Elite Male 65kg – Adriel Singh lost by RSC to Edward Richards of Aotearoa. In his first overseas competition, Adriel gained valuable experience that will support his continued development as a boxer.

Every boxer displayed class, determination, and heart in the ring today, representing Fiji with pride and passion. Vinaka, Team Fiji.
