It might sound like alchemy, but the energy in places where salty ocean water and freshwater mingle could provide a massive source of renewable power. Atlantic Hurricanes Are Becoming Stronger Faster, Largely Due to Climate Change

Hurricane Michael, October 10, 2018. © NASA/NOAA It took Hurricane Michael just 24 hours to intensify from a Category 1 storm to a Category 4 before slamming into Florida’s Gulf Coast last October. Similarly, Hurricane Harvey in 2017 went from a Category 2 to a Category 4 in less than a day. This trend of rapid intensification is becoming more common among tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean, largely due to climate change. [ 54 more words ]

Warming threatens Himalayan glaciers

Climate change poses a growing threat to the glaciers found in the Hindu Kush and Himalayan mountain ranges, according to a new report. The study found that if CO2 emissions are not cut rapidly, two thirds of these giant ice fields could disappear. The glaciers are a critical water source for 250 million people living across eight different countries. Even if the world limits the temperature rise to 1.5C this century, at least one third of the ice would go. [ 78 more words ]

Find the perfect “not-beginner-but-almost-intermediate” surfboard

No longer a beginner? A minimal is a great intermediate surfboard, but an oversized shortboard will be more useful to you in the long run. Here’s why… The beauty of learning to surf in a wave pool is that you will progress at a steady pace. Hit it like you’d hit the gym and you’ll progress rapidly. For the ocean-dependent beginning surfer things like flat spells, hurricanes, shark scares or any of several other factors can interrupt your frequency of sessions. [ 112 more words ]

Ideal conditions for GSS Surf-Trip Group in Costa Rica

The surf-trip group currently visiting Tamarindo in Costa Rica are expecting these conditions this week; Caribbean - This week is quieter, with waves waist to chest high from the ENE. The swell picks up early Saturday when there will be some chest high plus sets. It lasts through Monday but then fades back to knee to waist for Pacific - The first big SSW swell of the year arrives Friday (2.3 feet at 18 seconds) and maxes Sunday (3 ft at 15 seconds) which translates to surf 1-2 feet overhead and some spots a couple of feet bigger.
