We all know that drafting saves energy.
The real question is: how much?

Until now, accurately measuring the aerodynamic benefit of a slipstream required complex testing protocols, simulations, or wind tunnel sessions.
With the Wasted Watts Tracker, it is now possible to visualize these effects directly on the road, from your own bike, and almost in real time (with a delay of around 7 seconds).

In this test, we ride behind a Citroën Ami and repeatedly switch between riding in the draft and riding in the wind.
Every time the rider moves into the slipstream, Wasted Watts drop dramatically. As soon as he moves back into the wind, they immediately rise again.

The result is clear: the aerodynamic benefit can represent well over 100 watts at 45 km/h.
This video is not about proving that drafting works. We already knew that. The goal is to show that, for the first time, these effects can be measured directly while riding.
By making energy losses visible, the Wasted Watts Tracker helps riders understand where their watts are going and identify opportunities to ride faster, more efficiently, and for longer.

Many people think the Wasted Watts Tracker is only designed for pro riders.

We completely disagree.

Every cyclist loses power through aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, drivetrain friction, and many other real-world factors, whether you ride at 20, 25, or 30 km/h.

The goal of the Wasted Watts Tracker is simple:
help riders understand where energy is being lost, so they can reduce those losses and ride faster.

Because what gets measured gets improved.

You don’t need to be a WorldTour rider to benefit from better efficiency on the bike.

Position, tire pressure, equipment choices, aerodynamics, pacing, everything has an impact. And now, these impacts can finally be measured directly on the road.

The Wasted Watts Tracker is not only for specialists.
It’s for every cyclist who wants to become faster and more efficient.

What happens when a WorldTour performance team tests the Wasted Watts Tracker?

During this session, Victor Scholler from Groupama-FDJ came to evaluate our technology and especially the precision of the Wasted Watts Tracker in real-world conditions.

The initial objective was also to test our RTK GPS technology, which will be featured in a dedicated upcoming video. But in this reel, we focused on the tracker itself.

To validate the system, Victor performed two baseline tests and obtained exactly the same result, down to the watt. This level of repeatability highlights the precision and consistency of the Wasted Watts Tracker, even in outdoor riding conditions.

One of the key aspects that impressed the Groupama-FDJ team was the ability to visualize and compare aerodynamic data in near real time directly while riding.

Beyond the data itself, one of the biggest surprises was the simplicity of the setup and the ease of use of the system. Having feedback from a WorldTour performance environment like Groupama-FDJ is extremely valuable for us as we continue developing the Wasted Watts ecosystem.

More to come soon on the RTK GPS technology.

One of the most common questions we receive is:
What is the aerodynamic drag penalty of the Wasted Watts Tracker itself?

The rear module sits behind the rider, in an area already covered by the body. In practice, this means the aerodynamic penalty is essentially zero, and it may even slightly improve airflow in some situations.

As for the front module, it was specifically designed with a very low frontal area and an aerodynamic shape.

We performed several real-world tests with our previous system and were not able to measure any meaningful aerodynamic difference.

Today, we estimate that the aerodynamic cost of riding with the front module is below 1 watt at 45 km/h.

The goal of the Wasted Watts Tracker is not to add drag.
It is to help riders understand where watts are actually being lost, and how to reduce them.

Why does the Wasted Watts Tracker use an RTK GPS mounted at the rear of the bike?

Because precision matters.

Unlike a standard bike computer GPS, the Wasted Watts Tracker uses a centimetric-level RTK GPS system capable of measuring elevation and positioning with extreme accuracy.

To achieve this level of precision, the GPS needs maximum satellite visibility. That’s why the module is positioned at the rear of the bike, placing it at the front would cause the rider’s body to block part of the satellite signal and reduce accuracy.

The system operates with multiple GPS precision modes, including a fixed RTK mode capable of delivering true centimetric positioning.

This accuracy is essential for the Wasted Watts calculations:
it allows the system to precisely correct elevation changes, analyze speed variations, and compute real-world efficiency directly on the road.

The result is not only highly accurate Wasted Watts data, but also an extremely clean and precise .fit GPS trace for post-ride analysis.

Real-world testing requires real-world precision.

How quickly can you compare two riding positions in real-world conditions?

With the Wasted Watts Tracker lap mode, the answer is simple: around 30 seconds.
In this test, we compared a comfortable non-aero position with a more aggressive aero position at 35 km/h.

Result:
233 Wasted Watts in the non-aero position.
202 Wasted Watts in the aero position.

That’s a gain of around 31 watts just by changing position.
No wind tunnel.
No complex out-and-back testing.
No heavy protocol.
Just a road, a target speed, and real-world data.

Using centimetric RTK GPS accuracy, precise speed analysis, and airflow measurements, the Wasted Watts Tracker allows riders to evaluate aerodynamic efficiency directly on the road with near real-time feedback.

Performance is not only about producing power.
It’s about wasting less of it.
