Eshaku, Keirei, and Saikeirei are three of the main types of bows in Japanese culture, known as ojigi (お辞儀). Bowing is a form of non-verbal communication that expresses respect, gratitude, and social hierarchy. The angle and duration of the bow are crucial for conveying the appropriate level of formality and sincerity.
Types of Japanese Bows
Eshaku (会釈): This is a slight bow of approximately 15 degrees. It is considered the most informal and is used for casual greetings among colleagues or acquaintances, or when passing by someone.
Keirei (敬礼): This is a more formal bow of about 30 degrees. It is commonly used in business settings, such as greeting clients, meeting a superior, or showing respect to someone of a higher social status.
Saikeirei (最敬礼): This is the deepest and most formal bow, typically at an angle of 45 degrees or more. It is used to show profound gratitude, a sincere apology, or the highest level of respect to a very important person, such as a dignitary or a person of high rank.
In addition to the degree of the bow, proper bowing etiquette involves keeping the back straight and avoiding eye contact with the person being bowed to. Men typically keep their hands at their sides, while women clasp their hands in front of them.
