Paris – Roubaix sparks discussions about tire widths every year. This time, an image of Pogacar’s bike went viral, revealing that the world champion’s bike is fitted with tires measuring 38.23 mm in width. But is this allowed under UCI regulations? Does the 38.23 mm width comply?
The UCI rules indirectly restrict tire width for road bikes by capping the overall wheel diameter at 700 mm with inflated tires. Given that rims have a standard diameter of 622 mm, the remaining space for tires amounts to 78 mm, which translates to 39 mm per side.
Since wider tires increase the overall height when inflated, this 700 mm wheel diameter limit effectively imposes a maximum tire width.
What exactly is this limit? It varies based on the tire and the internal width of the rim. There isn't a straightforward answer, but generally, most commercially available tires with a nominal width of 35 mm on typical rims will remain within this limit.
