From slate and pencil to a smartphone underwater. 📱🤿
During PADI Instructor Development Courses, candidate evaluations have traditionally been recorded underwater using a prompt card, pencil and large slate.
One PADI Instructor decided to take a different approach.
Using the AI coding tool Cursor, he built a digital scoring web app that can be opened on a smartphone before the dive and then used completely offline underwater.
With the DIVEVOLK SeaTouch 4 Max, the phone’s full touchscreen remains accessible underwater — making it possible to navigate the web app, enter scores and complete evaluations directly during the dive. 🌊
No Wi-Fi. No cellular signal. No app download required.
After the dive, the completed evaluation can be saved directly as a clean PDF for the student.
And it didn’t stay just a personal experiment.
The tool was also shared with Course Director Linda, who now uses it during instructor evaluations as well.
The same idea was later applied to an interactive SF2 CCR pre-dive checklist, where software can even assist with calculations and help reduce opportunities for human error.
It’s a great example of what becomes possible when a smartphone underwater is more than just a camera.
It becomes a tool. 📱🌊
Are you a dive professional building your own digital tools for training? We’d love to hear about it.
