EPPO/OEPP EPPO is an intergovernmental organization responsible for cooperation in plant health

The main activities of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) are:
- Setting regional standards and as a Regional PPO, participating in global activities related to standards on phytosanitary measures coordinated by the IPPC Secretariat within FAO.
- Organizing expert Working Party & Panel meetings of the EPPO region.
- Organizing international conferences and workshops for researchers, managers of National PPOs, phytosanitary inspectors...

This week, the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization) Panel on Phytosanitary Measures is being hosted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in Parma, Italy.

The Panel is reviewing a wide range of plant health topics, including:
🔹 Pest risk analyses (PRAs) and PRA reports for Austropuccinia psidii, Phlyctinus callosus, Monema flavescens and Xylotrechus chinensis
🔹 Recent incursions and outbreaks of A1 pests in the EPPO region
🔹 Revision of existing EPPO Standards requiring updates
🔹 The possible development of an EPPO list of Regulated Non-Quarantine Pests (RNQPs)

This week, Nico Horn, the EPPO Acting Director-General, has been attending the 38th Technical Consultation among Regional Plant Protection Organizations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia organised by the International Plant Protection Convention.

Through the TC-RPPO, regional and global plant health leaders can exchange experiences, align efforts and contribute to practical solutions that strengthen the global phytosanitary system.

❓Considering its increased impact, the NPPO of Spain suggested its addition to the EPPO Alert List.

Last week, EPPO Scientific Officers Rob Tanner and Muriel Suffert took part in the kick-off meeting for PhytoPRISM, a new €6 million EU Horizon project led by the University of Warwick to strengthen Europe’s response to invasive plant pests and diseases.
Bringing together 15 organisations across eight countries, the PhytoPRISM project will develop a Europe-wide open-access platform combining epidemiological modelling with real-world knowledge, to develop tools to help authorities and the agricultural sector predict, prevent and manage plant pest outbreaks more effectively and sustainably.
It was great to finally meet all the partners involved and we look forward to developing our shared vision.
