A lot of people think learning French is just about grammar and vocabulary.

But for most of the expats I work with, the real challenge is something else…

😰 The fear of speaking.
😳 The fear of sounding silly.
🙈 The fear of making mistakes and being judged.

Language learning is emotional.

And fear can block you more than any grammar rule ever will.

In my classes, yes we work on language.

But we also build confidence. 💪

Because it’s not just about speaking “correctly”...

It’s about feeling safe enough to express yourself in French.

Have you ever felt stuck—even when you knew the words?

10/04/2025

Do you know this feeling?

You want to speak French… but the words just won’t come out.
Your brain freezes, you overthink, you're scared of making mistakes.
You wonder: “What if they laugh at me?”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Almost every learner goes through this.
But the good news? It’s not permanent — and you CAN overcome it.

3 simple steps to feel more confident speaking French:

1️⃣ Let go of perfection
Your French doesn’t need to be perfect — just understandable.
Even with mistakes, you can have real, meaningful conversations.

2️⃣ Get into action mode
Watching videos and doing exercises is helpful…
But without speaking practice, your brain won’t be ready for real-life situations.
👉 Repeat out loud.
👉 Speak with native speakers — even 5 minutes a day.
👉 Get support, and put yourself in real conversations.

3️⃣ Shift your mindset
Every mistake is part of the learning process.
If you never speak, you never improve.
And no — French people won’t laugh at you.
They’ll actually admire your effort.

So… what if you decided to go for it — today?

Tell me: What’s YOUR biggest fear when speaking French?

🇫🇷 Speaking French isn’t just a skill – it’s the key to integration!

Living in France but not speaking French yet? Then you’ve probably felt it: even though many people speak English, without French, something is missing.

Integration isn’t just about being physically present. It’s about feeling comfortable in your daily life. And language plays a crucial role in that.

French: A Key That Opens Every Door
Connecting with locals
Saying “Bonjour, comment ça va?” at the bakery, joking with colleagues, chatting with neighbors… These small interactions make a big difference. Without them, it’s easy to feel isolated.

Understanding the culture better
French isn’t just a language—it’s a way of thinking, interacting, and debating. Here, conversation is a national sport. If you don’t speak, you miss out on a huge part of social life.

Becoming more independent
Ordering at a restaurant, booking a doctor’s appointment, talking to your child’s teacher… Without French, everything is more complicated. Mastering the language means gaining confidence and autonomy.

So, how can you improve?
❌ Waiting to “speak perfectly” before trying → A common mistake! Accept making mistakes and just go for it.
❌ Relying only on apps like Duolingo → They help, but nothing replaces real practice.

✅ Surrounding yourself with French speakers → Join conversation groups, talk with colleagues, neighbors, and friends. The more you listen and speak, the faster you improve.
✅ Practicing a little every day → Even 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference!

Speaking French isn’t just about learning a language. It’s what turns an expat experience into true immersion.

What was your biggest challenge when you first arrived in France?

✨ 3 truths about learning French that no one tells you (but you absolutely need to know):

✅ You won’t speak like a native… and that’s OK!
Having an accent or making mistakes is NOT a problem. What matters is being understood and speaking with confidence.

✅ Grammar alone is not enough.
You can know all the subjunctive rules and still freeze when speaking. Why? Because speaking is a practical skill. You need to practice, not just memorize.

✅ Doing exercises on Duolingo isn’t enough.
Filling in blanks is great… but if you don’t actually use your French (speaking, writing, interacting), you’ll stay stuck at a theoretical level.

📢 What truth surprised you the most in your French learning journey?

Why do 50% of learners give up on French?

"I don’t have time."
"I’ve lost my motivation."
"I'm not progressing fast enough."

Let’s be honest: these are just excuses.

The real issue? A lack of structure and commitment.

No clear goal → Without a specific goal, it’s easy to give up. Set achievable milestones.
The illusion of quick progress → You won’t become bilingual in three months. Appreciate every small victory.
Passive learning → Watching Netflix isn’t enough. You need to practice and DARE to speak.
Lack of support → Learning alone is tough. A coach or a community makes all the difference.

If you truly want to speak French, stop waiting for "the right moment" and commit today!

Have you ever lost motivation? What helped you stay on track?

The common thread among my students

The one thing my students all share? The desire to speak French perfectly without making any mistakes.

I used to feel the same way when I lived in England. I was afraid of making mistakes and didn’t speak as much as I should have. But the truth is, you can only improve by speaking and practicing even if you make mistakes along the way.

What about you? Do you fear making mistakes when speaking a new language?

Learning French with Duolingo – My honest opinion

I used Duolingo for learning English, and while it’s fun, it’s not enough if you want to speak French fluently. The app focuses on vocabulary, but not on grammar, conjugation, or speaking naturally.

If you’re serious about learning French, you’ll need more than just an app.

Have you tried Duolingo? Was it helpful for you? Let’s chat below!

I hated my accent !

It's not something to hide—it’s what makes us unique!

I know it’s hard to hear, but let’s get real: if you want to speak French at a B2 level, it’ll take about 2 years with regular practice.

If you plan to study or work in France, start learning early, don't expect to master it overnight!

Stop thinking you can speak like a native!

It’s a tough reality, but let’s be honest: speaking like a native is only possible if you’ve lived in the country for years or grown up there. For most of us, fluency is the goal, but aiming for native-level perfection may not be realistic.

It's okay to make mistakes. What matters is communicating effectively and confidently!

What do you think about this?
Does aiming for perfection hold you back?

Let’s talk about it below!
