OFFICIAL: Danny Rohl appointed new Rangers head coach & succeeds Russell MartinRangers have appointed Danny Rohl as the club's new head coach on an initial two-and-a-half year deal.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss, who had initially withdrawn from the race, has been appointed as Russell Martin's permanent replacement 15 days after his sacking.

The 36-year-old was keen on landing the job and taking training last week but stepped away after becoming aware that others were ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, after talks with Kevin Muscat collapsed on Sunday night, Rohl flew into Glasgow to finalise a deal.

Rohl began his coaching career at RB Leipzig, where he progressed to assisting Ralph Hasenhuttl before following him to Southampton in 2018.

He then became assistant manager to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich in 2019, helping the club win the Bundesliga.

In October 2023, he became a manager for the first time, guiding Sheffield Wednesday to Championship safety.

He will take charge immediately with his first match in charge against Brann on Thursday in the Europa League.

On his appointment he said: "It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of Head Coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world.

"I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

"The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now - my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.

"We have no time to waste, we start straight away. I respect that trust is earned and understand we have to give the supporters confidence in what we are doing by showing it on the pitch from the start.

"The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too.

"Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, unity and success - that is exactly what you will get from me and what I want my team to represent for all of you.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the squad and getting down to work ahead of Thursday's game away to Brann."

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh commented: "We're very pleased to welcome Danny to Rangers, an ambitious coach who shares the club's hunger for progress and success. His experience at elite level, in high pressure environments, makes him a strong fit for what we expect here.

"We know the past few months have been challenging, but our focus has always been on getting the right person, who is ready to immediately embrace this football club and the demands that come with it. Danny impressed us with his vision, his character, and his understanding of what Rangers stands for. We believe he can help restore pride, momentum, and ultimately success."

Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe said: "This has been a thorough process to ensure we identified the right person to lead the club forward. Danny clearly has tactical intelligence and a hunger to match the ambitions of Rangers. With Danny at the helm, we intend to compete through every minute on the pitch in all competitions."

Chief Executive Patrick Stewart said: "Danny brings real conviction, clarity and leadership to the role. We know results this season have fallen below our expectations, but with Danny and his staff in place, we're confident we can get this season back on track.

"It's now our job to give him every support possible to move the club forward quickly and decisively."

Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell added:"Danny has the qualities required to succeed here, allied with being an exceptional coach.

"He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers.

"His job will be to get the best out of the players and build a team that, first and foremost, wins, as we all target success this season."

'Rohl has the potential to go to the very top'
Analysis from Sky Sports' Simeon Gholam:

"It would be fair to say that Danny Rohl performed miracles at Sheffield Wednesday - particularly when you consider the context of what has happened at the club since his departure.

"He joined the club as a 34-year-old in October 2023. They were without a win in 11 games and seven points adrift of safety.

"It took him a while to get up and running. Only one win came in his first six games in charge - and that was at home against a Rotherham side that finished bottom of the league.

"But after about six weeks of his high-pressing style being imposed, things really started to click, and he somehow managed to keep them up. Wednesday were in the bottom three that season from the second week of August until their 44th game of 46. Four wins and two draws from their final six kept them afloat.

"And last season, even as the turmoil that has spilled over this season brewed off the pitch, he led them to a 12th-placed finish. With greater resources at his disposal, a play-off push wouldn't have been out of the equation.

"Rohl is an incredibly amiable, warm character and he is very easy to like, as shown by a couple of excellent turns as a pundit during last year's ITV Euros coverage.

"He was schooled at RB Leipzig before coaching spells at Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team. He has worked with some of the best, and has all the potential to go to the very top."

Rohl will 'have you off your seat'
Charlie Austin was a Southampton player when Rohl was there as assistant coach to Ralph Hasenhuttl:

"Ultimately, he was the man that brought all the tactics in.

"At the time his English wasn't so great and Ralph Hasenhuttl used to stand next to him on the side and then he would come in and basically just relay what Danny had told him in German really and that was it. He was a phenomenal coach, he really was.

"The Rangers fans, yes you can say, 'do you think he's going to be Russell Martin 2.0?' and all that, but you don't go and work for clubs like he has done, German national team, Leipzig, Bayern Munich and then to go on to the job he did at Sheffield Wednesday, keeping them in the championship, was phenomenal.

"So now the biggest bit is going to Rangers, realising how big the club is, but I'd be excited about him coming in.

"Yes, you haven't got someone like Gerrard or Kevin Muscat that's affiliated to the club already, but you've got someone that's coming in, a young, hungry manager that will have you off your seat, just be ready for your players to get really fit and counter-pressing at its finest."

OFFICIAL: Jude Bellingham is named England men's player of the year

Jude Bellingham has been named England men's senior player of the year by fans, beating Declan Rice, Harry Kane and Cole Palmer to the award.

The Real Madrid star, who failed to win the Champions League and LaLiga last season as he did during his first campaign at the Bernabeu, still impressed fans enough with his performances on the pitch, having chalked up the most votes to claim the gong.

Bellingham, 22, is now just the second player in English history to win the award while playing for a foreign club, with Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves the first to pick it up back in 2006.

The 2024-25 campaign saw Bellingham contribute three goal and five assists for England, as the Three Lions fought to bounce back from the heartache of their 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2024 European Championships.

His overheard kick in stoppage time against Slovakia at the tournament will no doubt have remained in the minds of fans, as that goal kept England's hopes alive and led to them reaching the final under Gareth Southgate in Germany.

The central midfielder was honoured with the award ahead of Arsenal star Rice in second and England captain Kane in third.

Galatasaray fans set off firework display as Liverpool team hotel gets 3am shock

Galatasaray supporters set off fireworks outside the Liverpool team hotel in the early hours of Tuesday morning ahead of their Champions League clash this evening

Galatasaray fans caused a storm outside Liverpool's team hotel in the early hours of Tuesday morning, setting off fireworks ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash at RAMS Park this evening. Both teams are eager to climb the Champions League table.

A couple of weeks ago, Eintracht Frankfurt made a stunning comeback against Galatasaray, coming from behind to win 5-1. Yunus Akgün put the Süper Lig champions in the lead within the first 10 minutes, but an own goal from Davinson Sanchez levelled the score about half an hour later.

The match took a dramatic turn at Deutsche Bank Park, with the German club scoring twice just before the end of the first half. Frankfurt added two more goals after the interval, securing all three points.

This victory propelled the Bundesliga team to the top spot in the 'league phase', while Okan Buruk's squad slipped to second from bottom. In a desperate bid to secure their first win of the new Champions League season, Galatasaray fans went to great lengths to disrupt Liverpool's preparations.

On Monday night, supporters set off fireworks outside the hotel where the Reds were reportedly staying. A video of the incident, shared by on X (formerly Twitter), has gone viral, showing masked fans chanting and setting off fireworks at around 3am.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Slot insisted Galatasaray were unfortunate to suffer defeat against Frankfurt a fortnight ago. The Liverpool manager said: "Their loss against Frankfurt, I have watched that game and for me they were very, very, very unlucky in that game.

"The chances they gave away were only small, and it was either the quality of Frankfurt or little bit of bad luck for Galatasaray that they conceded five, because if they play the same game again, they will never, ever, ever concede five goals again in that same game because they played much better than the 5-1 showed.

"That's also what you see now at the beginning of the season here in Turkey, seven wins and only conceded two if I am correct, scored a lot of goals, so a very, very good team and a very good manager who has been so successful over here as a player."

Slot added: "So they know what it takes to win the league and know what it takes to win a game of football, so we have to be prepared for that."

On Galatasaray's threat from set-pieces, Slot remarked: "I think you've already given the answer: we've shown we are a team that can defend set-pieces really well. More and more in football, you see it becomes more and more a set-piece game.

"I know set-pieces are a part of football, but I watched Brentford [versus] Man United on the way up to Palace. I saw 25 minutes of that game, and I think it was 20 minutes of long throw-ins, set-pieces, long throw-ins, set-pieces, corner kick, goal-kick... a goal-kick is not a set-piece, by the way!

"This is the style of football you see more and more, mainly in the Premier League, in my opinion. There is a reason for me why it is done even more in the Premier League than in other leagues, [and that's] because in the Premier League you can do much more.

"You can attack a goalkeeper, for example, you can even touch him, and it is not even a foul. This is something everybody likes about the Premier League, but in Europe, this is definitely a bit different.

"We knew Galatasaray were also strong on set-pieces, but I can tell you we were a force on set-pieces last season and we won our last Champions League game because of a set-piece [when] we scored the 3-2 with Virgil [van Dijk]. We were very, very, very close to scoring one against Palace.

"Every team you face at the moment, you have to be so, so, so well prepared when it comes to set-pieces. Back in the days when I was still playing, we only talked about football and there was not even a set-piece, let alone a set-piece meeting.

"Nowadays, set-piece meetings take just as long as the tactical meeting or the preparation for the game football-wise. That tells you the importance we give to set-pieces and I think every team around Europe gives to set-pieces

Rooney has 'no faith' in Amorim: 'Soul gone' from Man Utd

Wayne Rooney believes the soul has gone from his former club Manchester United and he has no faith in manager Ruben Amorim to turn things around.

United's record goalscorer said the club was "broken" on the latest edition of BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, and he goes to games "expecting" them to lose.

Manchester United's 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday meant they have collected 34 points from Amorim's 33 league games in charge and have still to win successive matches.

The club are said to remain supportive of their head coach despite the damaging loss which left them 14th in the Premier League table.

But Rooney added that some current players "don't deserve to wear the shirt", the side "needs a new engine" and supporters are "waiting for the club to crumble".

"I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence, there needs to be big changes in my opinion," said the former England striker, who won five league titles during 13 years at Old Trafford.

"Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester Untied back."

United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their worst finish to a top-flight campaign since they were relegated from the old First Division in 1973-74.

Amorim took charge of United last November having lifted the Portuguese title with Sporting in successive seasons.

Defeat at Brentford meant the Red Devils are winless in their last eight Premier League away games (two draws and six losses), their longest run since 2019.

They last enjoyed back-to-back league victories between May and August 2024.

"There needs to be a clear message from the owners," added Rooney.

"Whether that is the Glazers, [minority owner] Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there has to be a message of where this club is going. At the minute we are all sitting there waiting for it to crumble.

"The culture of that football club has gone. I see it on a daily basis. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs.

"I've got two kids [in the academy] at that football club and I really hope this doesn't affect what they're doing. What I'm seeing at that football club is not Manchester United."

After the disappointing defeat by Brentford, Amorim said: "I am never concerned about my job - I am not that kind of guy."

The Portuguese, 40, has been criticised for his stubbornness in sticking with his favoured 3-4-2-1 formation.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, ex-Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards said those tactics could lead to "his undoing" and Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer said Amorim was fortunate to have avoided the sack.

"I just don't know what's going on," admitted ex-Birmingham City, Derby County and Plymouth Argyle boss Rooney, 39.

"I have tried my hand in management and it didn't work out too well, I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he is still a young manager and I'm sure he still has a massive future, but what's going on at Man Utd, this is not Man Utd.

"I honestly hope he can turn it round and he does. But if you're saying to me, 'do you believe he will?', then, after everything I've seen, honestly, I've got no faith in it."

The former England skipper, who also captained United, added: "I don't recognise the whole football club. I don't see players fighting, I don't see character, I don't see desire to win.

"I go to a game watching, expecting, here we go again - expecting the team to lose or maybe pick up a point.

"It's not even just results on the pitch. It's everything about the club that needs fixing - Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have walked into a real challenge.

"We're seeing staff members getting sacked after 20, 30 years who are very important people to that football club.

"The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life. It needs something to kickstart that football club."

Ratcliffe's Ineos Group bought a 27.7% stake in United in February 2024 worth about £1.25bn ($1.6bn).

The overall number of employees has dropped from 1,100 to 700 in the past two years following controversial redundancies.

The Glazer family, who have owned the 20-time English top-flight champions since 2005, retain a majority stake, but Ineos have taken control of the club's football operations.

Pep Guardiola: Rodri said he had lots of pain in his knee, he cannot play
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued further details concerning the ongoing fitness worries around Rodri and the latest on Savinho’s future.
The latest comments from the boss come after an eventually comfortable 5-1 win over Scott Parker’s Burnley on Saturday afternoon, as City continue their fine form following the September international break.

On Rodri’s fitness concerns: “Rodri, yesterday [in] training, he said, ‘I’m not able to play. I have a lot of pain in my knee, I cannot play, I cannot play’. And I said, ‘You cannot play? You don’t play. So, another one is going to play’. I don’t know yet, I don’t know. (Is it the same knee that he injured?) Yeah.”

On whether he has ever come across anyone as prolific as Erling Haaland: “[Lionel] Messi, Cristiano [Ronaldo], right? In terms of goals, yeah [he should be compared to them].

“At his age, maybe the numbers are better, but yeah, in terms of goals; him, Harry Kane, [Robert] Lewandowski, maybe, you know, these kind of guys. But it’s two months, [and] Messi and Cristiano have been doing [it for] 15, 20 years, every season.

“But Erling is still young, and yeah, he’s at that level. In terms of goals, he’s at that level.”

On Savinho’s long-term future: “Yeah [he’s going to sign a new long-term Manchester City contract]. Yeah, we were so clear that we wanted to keep him. It depends on the offer, maybe the offer was not good enough for the club, I don’t know.

“But of course, at his age, last season he played a lot of minutes, can play on both sides, right and left, has a pace that is unbelievable. So in those terms, he’s really good.”

On Nico O’Reilly’s new Manchester City contract: “Yeah, it happened, and Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly, and Savino I think is close, and in the past Ruben [Dias] had done it as well.

“So the club will try to, you know, I’m pretty sure they will try to, the players like we want him, do the effort that we need to stay here longer. And I’m really pleased. Nico is growing a lot, and I think since he started to play we lost just one game; the final of the FA Cup against Crystal Palace.

“Always has been involved. We were in defeat all the time, so Nico helped us a lot, improved a lot in his aggressivity, and in set pieces, and with the ball, and yeah, we’re really, really pleased.”
