Martin Lowe

We wanted to write this to remember a special past participant of TX and share a recent story of reuniting a family with a special object. Martin was a part of the alternative academy project in the early days of Transition Extreme in 2008 and later became a volunteer, helping out in the skatepark. One of those guys with infectious energy who kept everyone laughing and we loved having him around. Watching Martin progress and push himself on a BMX during his time here was incredible and he became a very talented rider, constantly tearing around the park.

Tragically Martin lost his life far too soon and is missed by everyone that knew and loved him. One of the many things Martin did while at TX was a painting and poem, inspired by his BMX riding. Not one to do things by halves Martin decided to make it around 6 foot wide! It's a brilliant piece of work that was displayed for years before being put into storage.

We were approached recently by family members of Martin who had been trying to track the piece down and were surprised and delighted to find out that we had it in safe keeping and they were able to come and collect it. Bex and Abby got in touch after to say:

Bex: “After Abby told me about Martin’s painting a few years ago, I knew I wanted to try and track it down for her. After nearly 20 years it felt like a long shot, and I’d almost given up hope - until I reached out to Joe Coleman at Transition Extreme. Not only did Joe know exactly where the painting was, he also remembered Martin from his time there. We’re so grateful to Joe and the whole TX team for helping bring this special piece back to the family. ❤️”

Abby: “Transition Extreme was a safe place where Martin could escape some of the difficulties of life and just be a teenager, enjoying the activities he loved. He’s missed beyond measure and it’s so special to have something of him that will now always have a home with us.”

In an organisation like this there so many things that go on but we wanted to pause and take the time to share this story of reuniting a family with this piece and give a chance to remember Martin who is a part of TX history and won't be forgotten.
