Abergavenny Bowls Club

Today's venue for the Abergavenny Bowls Club Tour was the Jersey Indoor Bowling Stadium. Obviously getting some sneaky practice in before our Indoor season starts in two weeks time 😃.

A lovely afternoon at St. Saviour's Bowls Club in Jersey today, thank you for your hospitality we all enjoyed your company.

We managed to complete our Club Finals on Wednesday when the Triples Competition Final was held.
In an extremely close game Mary Evans, Ian McCuish and Rob Poynter came out victors against Sue Pritchard, Gordon King and Peter Beynon with the score of 20 shots to 16. Well done to you all, especially Mary for getting her 4th title of the year 👏👏👏👏👏👏.

On Saturday the GBL team played their last League game of the season at home against Cwmbran Park.
On the rink of Richard Richards, Stephen Williams, Roger Griffiths and Gerald Parry they lost the first 6 ends and got onto the scoreboard on the 7th end to be 7-1 down. Steady scoring saw them level the score at 8 all on the 10th end and go on to take the lead 12-8 by the 12th end. They continued to dominate and were 10 shots ahead on the penultimate end but then dropped 3 shots on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 19. Cwmbran Park 12.
On rink 2 Dave Hill, Jimmy Harris, Ian Turner and Ron Harris were having a close game and were 5-3 down after 6 ends but came back to be leading 9-8 after the 12th end. The 13th end saw them score a 5 but then they conceded 5 over the next 3 ends to make the score 14-13 in their favour. The last two ends went to Abergavenny with 2 shots on the 17th and 4 shots on the 18th end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 20. Cwmbran Park 13.
On the rink of Mike McGonagall, Ian McCuish, Colin Hughes and Charles Harper it was a tough game with Cwmbran Park taking a 7-2 lead at the 6th end. They lost a little ground over the next 6 ends to be 16-9 behind at the 12th end and at the last end the final rink score was Abergavenny 11. Cwmbran Park 19.
The final match score was Abergavenny 50. Cwmbran Park 44.

The Ladies win the Mary Wardle League for the 2nd year 👏👏👏👏.

On Sunday 16th a day trip to Weston -Super-Mare for a Mixed Friendly game against Victoria Bowls Club took place, it was an enjoyable day out for the Club with the five rink friendly taking place in the afternoon. Victoria Bowls Club were victors with the final overall match score of Abergavenny 74. Victoria 100.

On Tuesday 18th the Ladies played their last South Wales and Monmouthshire Ladies League game of the season against Panteg House at Avenue Road.
On the rink of Mary Evans, Val Jones, Lesley Radley and Mandy Harris Panteg House had a great start winning 7 of the first 8 ends and taking a 19 shots to 1 lead. The Abergavenny Ladies weren't allowed into the game by the opposition and only won 3 of the last 10 ends which made it an emphatic rink win for Panteg House with the score of Abergavenny 7. Panteg House 32.
It was a lot closer on the rink of Jenni MacGregor, Sue Jewell, Cath Badham and Mary Vale with each side getting 4 singles over the initial 8 ends. The game opened up a little with Abergavenny taking a lead of 10-7 on the 14th end only for Panteg House to level the score on the next end. Abergavenny lost the 17th end when they conceded 5 shots and could only score 2 shots on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 13. Panteg House 15.
The final match score was Abergavenny 20. Panteg House 47.

The Ladies were hosts to Oakdale Welfare on Saturday when they played them in the one rink Mary Wardle League.
Sue Pritchard, Mary Vale, Lesley Radley and Mary Evans took control after the first end and were 11 shots to 1 up after 5 ends. Oakdale rallied for 2 to make the score 11-7 before Abergavenny won the next 3 ends to increase the lead to 16-7. The score was 24-9 at the 15th end, the next two ends were won by Oakdale with singles and Abergavenny finished the game off by scoring 2 on the last end to make the final match score Abergavenny 26. Oakdale 11.

The Mens MBA team went to Oakdale for their final League game of the season on Saturday.
On rink 1 Rob Poynter, Steve File, Gordon King and Mike McGonagall the teams were evenly matched being all level at the 6th, 11th, 15th and 17th ends. Oakdale got to a 5 shot lead on the 20th end and Abergavenny could only get a single on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 16. Oakdale 20.
The rink of Rob Pursey, John Newell, Dave Cooper and Mike Hayward Oakdale had the slightly better start being 7-4 up after 7 ends. Abergavenny managed to peg them back and took a 13-12 lead on the 14th end, it remained close until the 19th end when Oakdale scored a 6 which they followed up with two singles to make the final rink score Abergavenny 15. Oakdale 23.
On rink 3 Jimmy Harris, Fred Mutimer, Ian McCuish and Peter Steed were 11-4 down after 6 ends but then won the next 10 ends to have an 18-11 lead, getting 3 singles on 3 of the last ends made the final rink score Abergavenny 21. Oakdale 12.
On the rink of John Vale, Dave Hill, Courtney Hemmings and Stephen Williams a good start saw Abergavenny leading 8-3 on the 7th end, they maintained their lead to be 13-6 up at the 13th end. Oakdale then took control and won 7 of the last 8 ends to take the lead and win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 14. Oakdale 20.
The final match score was Abergavenny 66. Oakdale 75. Abergavenny get 2 points and Oakdale 12 points.

It was Club Finals Day on Sunday to decide who our Club Champions would be after the 12 weeks of knockout rounds. The day started at 10:00am and came to a conclusion at 5:30pm. The Champions and runners up were:-

The Abergavenny Ladies were at Panteg House on Tuesday 11th playing in the South Wales and Monmouthshire Ladies League.
On the rink of Mary Evans, Diane Bevan, Dawn Kedward and Lesley Radley a reasonable start of winning the first two ends and leading by 3 shots was soon undone when they lost the next 8 consecutive ends to go 14 shots to 3 behind. The final 5 ends were a lot better for Abergavenny and the game finished with Panteg Houses lead reduced with the final rink score of Abergavenny 9. Panteg House 15.
The rink of Jenni MacGregor, Val Jones, Julia Salter and Sue Williams got off to a bad start by dropping a 5 on the first end, they managed to claw the shots back by winning the next 5 ends and take a 6-5 lead. It was then a case of win 2 ends and then lose 2 ends so at the 12th end Panteg House were leading 12-11. Abergavenny then broke away winning the last 3 ends and the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 16. Panteg House 12.
The final match score was Abergavenny 25. Panteg House 27.

On Saturday the MBA team were at home to Panteg Park in a game where Abergavenny were trying to keep out of the relegation zone and Panteg Park were trying to get into the promotion spots.
On the rink of Jimmy Harris, Fred Mutimer, Ron Harris and Peter Steed a good start saw them leading 5-1 after the first 4 ends, they maintained their lead at 4 shots until the 8th end. The 9th end saw Abergavenny score 6 shots to take a 10 shots lead at 15-5, by the 14th end Panteg Park had reduced their deficit to 17-10 and by the 18th end it was even closer at 20-17. Abergavenny then scored a 2 followed by a 5 and with Panteg Park scoring a single on the last end the final rink score was Abergavenny 28. Panteg Park 18.
On rink 2 Mike Collins, Rob Pursey, John Newell and Mike Hayward after dropping a 4 on the second end won the next 5 to take a 10-4 lead on the 7th end. Panteg Park won the next 4 ends for a 12-10 advantage before Abergavenny won the next 6 ends for a lead of 18-12. Panteg Park finished strongly winning the last 4 ends and forcing a draw with the final rink score of Abergavenny 18. Panteg Park 18.
On the rink of Rob Poynter, Steve File, Denis McDaid and Mike McGonagall the start was good with two 3's being scored and Panteg Park being restricted to 3 singles so at the 7th end it was 9-3 to Abergavenny. Panteg Park kept going and were making it a very close game by only being 1 behind at the 14th end at 12-11, Abergavenny managed to keep their noses in front and on the 20th end it was 17-15, two excellent bowls from the Panteg Park skip earned them 3 shots and the rink win at Abergavenny 17. Panteg Park 18.
Jack Vale, John Vale, Dave Hill and Dave Cooper had a nightmare start going 9-0 behind after 5 ends and 13-2 after 9 ends. Abergavenny didn't give up and started to battle back and were level at 15 all on the 16th end, they carried on and took the lead and were 20-15 up on the 19th end before Panteg Park won the last 2 ends scoring 3 in the process to make the final rink score Abergavenny 20. Panteg Park 18.
The final score was Abergavenny 83. Panteg Park 72. 11 points for Abergavenny and 3 for Panteg Park. A fantastic game with laughter, tension and plenty of skill, well played both teams.

On Friday the Mixed Team were playing at Ystrad Mynach in the South Wales Mixed League.
On the rink of John MacGregor, Peter Steed, Cath Badham and Sue Williams after getting a single on the first end they lost the next 8 to be 17-1 down. Scoring a 4 on the 10th end and three singles in the rest of the game meant that the final rink score was Abergavenny 8 Ystrad Mynach 28.
Jenni MacGregor, Mandy Harris, Ronnie Harris and Tom Cobb were 7-1 in the lead after 6 ends, but then Ystrad Mynach won the following 6 ends to give them a three shot lead of 10-7. It was all square at the 16th end, Ystrad Mynach got a single on the 17th end and Abergavenny scored 2 on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 14. Ystrad Mynach 13.
On the rink of Dave Cooper, Val Jones, Julia Salter and Mary Evans Abergavenny led after 6 ends by 6-4 but by the 10th end Ystrad Mynach had taken a 10-6 advantage. It was all Abergavenny for the last 8 ends as they went on to win all of them and win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 18. Ystrad Mynach 10.

On Saturday morning the Ladies were playing Ynysddu in the Mary Wardle League at Avenue Road.
It was very even for the first 9 ends when the score was 9-9. It stayed close until the 14th end when Abergavenny scored 6 shots and with both sides scoring a 3 and a 1 over the last 4 ends the final match score was Abergavenny 21. Ynysddu 15.

On Saturday afternoon the GBL team were playing against Caldicot at Avenue Road.
On rink 2 Dave Cooper, Val Jones, Roger Griffiths and Gerald Parry were 1 behind after 6 ends at 3-4, Abergavenny scored a 4 on the 8th end and then failed to win on the next 5 ends to make the score 16-7 in favour of Caldicot. Abergavenny had the better finish but it was not quite enough to win the rink with the final score being Abergavenny 13. Caldicot 18.
The rink of Mary Evans, John Vale, Ian McCuish and Sue Williams were playing against 3 Caldicot players who would lose 25% of their score as a penalty. Abergavenny got off to the better start leading 7-2 after 5 ends, Caldicot came back strongly with some high scoring ends and by the 12th end were leading by 20 shots to 8. Abergavenny then won 4 of the last 6 ends to make the final rink score Abergavenny 13. Caldicot 22 which after the penalty was reduced to 16•5.
The rink of Mike McGonagall, Mandy Harris, Colin Hughes and Charles Harper were also playing against a team of 3. A good start from Abergavenny saw them leading on the 6th end by 6-2, their form continued so by the 12th end it was 13-5 to Abergavenny. Caldicot didn't have any answers to Abergavenny and the final rink score was Abergavenny 18. Caldicot 8 which was revised to 6 after the 2% deduction. The final match score was Abergavenny 44. Caldicot 40•5.

The MBA team travelled to Six Bells for their game which was played on a fast, tricky and brown green.
On rink 2 Jimmy Harris, Fred Mutimer, Ron Harris and Peter Steed won 2 of the first 7 ends to be 6-9 behind, once they had got a pace and lines of the green they levelled the score at 12 all at the 14th end. Abergavenny then outplayed Six Bells by winning 6 of the last 7 ends to achieve a final rink score of Abergavenny 25. Six Bells 13.
Mike Collins, Steve File, Stephen Williams and Tom Cobb were trailing 8-2 after 7 ends but had levelled the score at 8 all by the 10th end. Abergavenny then took the lead and were 12-9 ahead at the 14th end, Six Bells overtook Abergavenny on the 18th end and were 2 shots up on the 19th end. Abergavenny tied the score at 15-15 on the penultimate end to make for a decisive last end which Six Bells won so the final rink score was Abergavenny 15. Six Bells 16.
On rink 4 John MacGregor, Dave Hill, Denis McDaid and Mike Hayward were 8-3 behind at the 7th end but they went ahead on the 10th end when they scored 5. It was a tight battle then with only a shot or two either way between them, with the score at 21-22 to Six Bells on the 20th end. Abergavenny couldn't compete with Six Bells on the last end conceding 6 shots so the final rink score was Abergavenny 21. Six Bells 28.
On rink 5 Rob Pursey, John Newell, Courtney Hemmings and Paul Jones were dominated by Six Bells being 9-3 down after 8 ends. Six Bells advantage continued to grow and it was 19-7 at the 14th end, Abergavenny weren't allowed into the game and the gap increased until the last end when the final rink score was Abergavenny 9. Six Bells 28.
The final match score was Abergavenny 70. Six Bells 85.

This week the Abergavenny Ladies were hosts to Garndiffaith in the South Wales and Monmouthshire Ladies League.
On rink 1 Jenni MacGregor, Sue Pritchard, Mary Vale and Sue Williams had a topsy turvey start scoring a 4 and conceding a 6 but were still level at 8-8 after the first 6 ends. They then started to take some control and by the 12th end had built up a lead of 5 shots at 14-9, they didn't let up over the last 6 ends and the final rink score was Abergavenny 19. Garndiffaith 12.
On the rink of Mary Evans, Val Jones, Lesley Radley and Mandy Harris Garndiffaith won the first two ends with singles but then lost the next 6 to give Abergavenny an 11-2 lead after 8 ends. Garndiffaith scored two more singles on the 9th and 11th ends with Abergavenny winning the others so the final rink score was Abergavenny 26. Garndiffaith 4.
The final match score was Abergavenny 45. Garndiffaith 16.

On Wednesday evening the EMBA team went to Monmouth for their final East Monmouthshire Bowling Association League game of the season.
On rink 2 John Vale, Courtney Hemmings, Dave Cooper and Ian McCuish won the first 2 ends before losing the next 3, scoring 3 on the 6th end bought them level with Monmouth at 6-6. They took a small lead until the 10th end when they conceded a 6, they got their lead back on the next end by scoring 5 shots to make it 13-12. They fell behind again but regained it on the 16th end to go 18-16 up. The last 2 ends were shared with singles so the final rink score was Abergavenny 19. Monmouth 17.
On the rink of Jimmy Harris, Denis McDaid, Dave Hill and Ron Harris there was nothing between the teams as they were 4-4 at 7 ends and it continued to be close until the 12th end when Abergavenny scored the first of three consecutive 3's, Monmouth hit back with a 6 on the 15th end to make the score 15-14 in favour of Abergavenny. Abergavenny went 18-14 ahead on the penultimate end and Monmouth got 3 shots on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 18. Monmouth 17.
On rink 4 Mike Collins, Richard Richards, Mike McGonagall and Tom Cobb were 4-3 behind after 6 ends. They took the lead for a few ends before being caught and overtaken with Monmouth having a 12-6 lead after the 12th end. With Monmouth only scoring one more single on the 14th end Abergavenny then took the last 4 ends to win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 14. Monmouth 13.
The final match score was Abergavenny 51. Monmouth 47.

The Abergavenny Ladies were at Croesyceillog for their League game on Tuesday 28th.
On the rink of Sue Pritchard, Mary Vale, Julia Salter and Sue Williams after losing the first end they won the next 2 for a 7-1 lead. Croesyceillog came back strongly to win the next 4 ends and take a 10-7 lead, it was a short lived lead as Abergavenny took the next 2 ends with a 4 and a 6 to go 17-10 in front. Croesyceillog kept chipping away at the Abergavenny lead and were only 2 behind at the 14th end at 18-16. Abergavenny then stormed ahead by winning the last 4 ends and win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 30. Croesyceillog 16.
The rink of Diane Bevan, Val Jones, Mandy Harris and Lesley Radley kept neck and neck with Croesyceillog for the first 8 ends when they were leading by 6 shots to 5. Croesyceillog then started to outscore Abergavenny and by the 14th end they had taken a 13-7 lead. Abergavenny managed to rally themselves and took control over the last 4 ends by winning them all and winning the rink with the score of Abergavenny 14. Croesyceillog 13. The final match score was Abergavenny 44. Croesyceillog 29.

On Wednesday the Men took on Caldicot in the East Monmouthshire Bowling Association League.
On the rink of Mike Collins, Steve File, Mike McGonagall and Tom Cobb it was a very close encounter with only single being scored for the first 12 ends with Abergavenny leading by 8 shots to 4. Caldicot were the first to score more than 1 with a 2 on the 13th end, Abergavenny got their own 2 on the 15th and followed it up with a 4 on the 16th and a 5 on the 18th and final end to win the rink with the score of Abergavenny 19. Caldicot 8.
On rink 2 John MacGregor, Peter Steed, Ron Harris and Mike Hayward were playing against a team of 3 Caldicot players. The game was very one sided after the first 3 ends when Caldicot were leading 3-1, after that Abergavenny won the next 11 ends to take a 20 shots to 3 advantage. Caldicot scored another single on the 15th end and Abergavenny won the last 3 ends so the final rink score was Abergavenny 25. Caldicot 4.
The rink of John Woodier, Fred Mutimer, Courtney Hemmings and Denis McDaid had a very close game with only one or two shots between the teams for the first 8 ends with Abergavenny being just ahead on 6-5. Abergavenny managed to creep 3 shots ahead but were caught and overtaken on the 12th end when Caldicot scored a 4 to make it 9-10. Abergavenny then went ahead again when they scored 4 on the 15th end to go 14-11. Caldicot then won the last 3 ends and by scoring a single on the last end got the rink win with the score of Abergavenny 14. Caldicot 15.
On rink 4 John Vale, Richard Richards, Stephen Williams and Ian McCuish were in control after 6 ends leading by 6-1. Caldicot managed to score a couple of 4's and by the 11th end were only 1 behind at 10-9. Again Abergavenny got a 5 shot lead only for Caldicot to reply with another 4, going into the last end Abergavenny were once more 5 shots ahead only for Caldicot to level the game when they scored a 5. The final rink score was Abergavenny 18. Caldicot 18.
The final match score was Abergavenny 76. Caldicot 45.

On Thursday the Men were in action again playing Newport Athletic at Caerleon in the Monmouthshire BA League Division 4.
On the rink of Mike Collins, Steve File, Mike Hayward and Tom Cobb a steady start saw them leading by 5-2 after 6 ends. The lead had extended to 12-4 at the 12th end and although they only won 2 of the last 6 ends they came away with the rink win with the score of Abergavenny 16. Newport Athletic 9.
On rink 3 John MacGregor, Dave Hill, Denis McDaid and John Woodier were level at 4-4 after 6 ends. They kept in touch with Newport Athletic until the 14th end when the home team scored a 5 to make the score 14-7. Newport Athletic kept the lead over the last 4 ends and the final rink score was Abergavenny 10. Newport Athletic 19.
On the rink of Jimmy Harris, John Vale, Ron Harris and Gordon King it was all square on 7 ends at 5 all. Abergavenny then pulled away and by the 12th end had a lead of 13-6, Newport Athletic then pulled themselves together and won the last 6 ends scoring 9 shots in the process and winning the rink, the final score was Abergavenny 13. Newport Athletic 15.
Jack Vale, Peter Steed, Richard Richards and Stephen Williams were level at 4-4 after 7 ends and it was still even at the 10th end at 6 all. Abergavenny then took control of the game and dominated the last 8 ends only letting Newport Athletic win on 2 of them. Abergavenny won the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 21. Newport Athletic 8. The final match score was Abergavenny 60. Newport Athletic 51. 10 points to Abergavenny and 4 for Newport Athletic.

On Friday the Mixed Team went to play Barry Athletic in the South Wales Mixed League, it was played in strong winds on a lightning fast green.
On the rink of Mike Hayward,Mary Evans, Mandy Harris and Tom Cobb the hosts got off to a flying start by winning the first 6 ends for a 13-0 lead. They maintained the lead and were leading 19-6 on the 12th end, with far too much to do Abergavenny battled on and reduced the deficit to 10 shots with the final rink score of Abergavenny 12. Barry Athletic 22.
John MacGregor, Sue Pritchard, Lesley Radley and Ron Harris were 8-2 down after 6 ends which increased to 20-4 after 12 ends. The Barry team and conditions proved to be too much for Abergavenny and the final rink score was Abergavenny 11. Barry Athletic 26.
On the rink of Jenni MacGregor, Peter Steed, Val Jones and Sue Williams it was all square at 6 apiece after 9 ends. Barry Athletic then scored 10 shots over the next 4 ends followed by a 6 on the 15th end to seal the rink win with the final score of Abergavenny 9. Barry Athletic 33.

On Saturday the GBL team were playing away against Bedwas & Trethomas. On the rink of Richard Richards, Mike Hayward, Mary Vale and Paul Jones Bedwas won the first 2 ends but Abergavenny replied by taking the next 5 to lead by 8 shots to 2. Bedwas scored 3 on the 8th end and after that for 7 ends singles were scored alternately by each side so the score at the 15th end was 12-8 to Abergavenny. The next 2 ends went to Bedwas with singles and two were shared with the last 2 ends being won by Abergavenny. The final rink score was Abergavenny 17. Bedwas & Trethomas 11.
The rink of John Newell, Ian McCuish, Roger Griffiths and Cath Badham fell behind in the initial 7 ends at 3-9 which extended to 19-3 by the 11th end. On the rink of John Vale, Charles Harper, Ian Turner and Gerald Parry Bedwas took a 1 shot lead at the 7th end of 5-4. Abergavenny began to fall behind but a 4 on the 14th bought them back into contention at 2 behind, three singles took them into the lead on the 17th end at 13-12. Bedwas then scored 5 on the 18th end followed by two singles to make the final rink score Abergavenny 14. Bedwas and Trethomas 19.
The final match score was Abergavenny 44. Bedwas & Trethomas 56. Two points for Abergavenny.

The MBA team were playing at Avenue Road against our old friends from Machen.
On rink 1 Jimmy Harris, John MacGregor, Dave Hill and Tom Cobb they got off to a good start and by scoring 6 on the 5th end it helped them to an 11-4 lead after 7 ends. Machen came back to 11-9 down before Abergavenny opened up a 19-9 advantage on the 13th end. Machen were unable to close the gap over the last 8 ends and the final rink score was Abergavenny 24. Machen 14.
On rink 2 Jack Vale, Rob Pursey, Courtney Hemmings and John Woodier won the first end, lost the next 5 and scored 4 on the 7th end to be tied at 6-6. Machen went ahead and at the 12th end were leading by 13-10, by the 16th end it was 19-14. The last 5 ends were extremely close but Machen held out to win the rink with the score of Abergavenny 17. Machen 23.
On rink 3 Mike Collins, Fred Mutimer, Ron Harris and Stephen Williams built an 8-2 lead after 7 ends and continued to dominate by leading 23 shots to 4 after 15 ends. There was not a lot Machen could do and the final rink score was Abergavenny 28. Machen 10.
On rink 4 Rob Poynter,Steve File, Denis McDaid and Mike McGonagall built-up a 7-3 lead after 7 ends. In a close game they managed to keep the advantage and at the 14th end it was 13-10, not a great deal changed over the last 7 ends despite some good play from both teams and the final rink score was Abergavenny 20. Machen 16.
The final match score was Abergavenny 89. Machen 63. 12 points for Abergavenny and 2 for Machen.

On Sunday the MBA team were in action once again this time of Crickhowell at Avenue Road.
On the rink of John MacGregor, Dave Hill, Mike Hayward and Denis McDaid Crickhowell got off to the better start and after 7 ends were leading 9-4, they continued to outscore Abergavenny and had extended their lead to 16-5 on the 12th end. Abergavenny staged a comeback by winning the next 7 ends and taking a 3 shot lead at 19-16, however Crickhowell weren't finished and won the last 2 ends to level the score and draw the rink with the score of Abergavenny 19. Crickhowell 19.
On rink 2 John Vale, Fred Mutimer, Courtney Hemmings and Stephen Williams were 9-4 in arrears after 7 ends, they continued to fall behind but by scoring 5 on the 14th end they got closer at 11-14. They got even closer on the 16th end at 13-14 but then fell behind again to lose the rink with the score being Abergavenny 14. Crickhowell 19.
On the rink of Mike Collins, John Newell, Mike McGonagall and Tom Cobb after being 6-3 down after 5 ends Abergavenny won the next 2 ends to take the lead on the 7th end at 9-6. This seemed to have kick started them because by the 14th end they had a lead of 20-12, they restricted Crickhowell to winning only 2 more ends to make the final rink score Abergavenny 28. Crickhowell 15.
On rink 1 Jimmy Harris, Rob Pursey, Ian McCuish and Ron Harris were only 2 behind on the 7th end at 6-4, by the 14th end they had levelled the score at 11-11 and went 1 ahead on the next end, dropping 8 shots over the next 3 ends put them 19-12 down. Scoring a 3 on the 18th gave them a chance but Crickhowell dashed all hopes by getting 6 on the 20th end. The final rink score was Abergavenny 16. Crickhowell 25.
The final match score was Abergavenny 77. Crickhowell 78.
So a win for Crickhowell by the narrowest of margins.

On Tuesday (21st) the Ladies had a game against Chepstow in the South Wales & Monmouthshire Ladies League at Avenue Road.
On rink 1 Mary Evans, Sue Jewell, Julia Salter and Sue Williams got off to a reasonable start being 2 shots behind on the 6th end at 5-7. The next 6 ends ended with a dead end on the 12th and a score of 11-10 to Abergavenny. On the 14th end Abergavenny went 2 ahead at 13-11 but Chepstow scored a 5 on the next end, Abergavenny replied with a single before Chepstow won the last 2 ends finishing with a 5 on the last end to make the final rink score Abergavenny 14. Chepstow 22.
On rink 3 Jenni MacGregor, Lesley Radley, Val Jones and Mary Vale had an excellent start winning the first 6 ends and taking a 10-0 lead. Chepstow tried to respond but only reduced the deficit to 6 shots by the 12th end at 13-7. Abergavenny kept Chepstow at distance and the final rink score was Abergavenny 17. Chepstow 10. The final match score was Abergavenny 31. Chepstow 32 so just 2 points for Abergavenny and 6 for Chepstow.

On Friday the Mixed Team went to Rhiwbina for a game in the South Wales Mixed League.
On rink 1 Peter Steed, Sue Williams, Mary Vale and Stephen Williams lost 4 of the first 6 ends to be 6-2 behind. Rhiwbina extended their lead to 16-4 by the 12th end, a better last third of the game saw Abergavenny reduce their deficit slightly to 9 shots with the final rink score of Abergavenny 12. Rhiwbina 21.
On rink 2 Mike Hayward, Ian McCuish, Val Jones and Ron Harris also lost 4 ends of the first 6 ends to be 7-3 down. The middle part of the game went to Rhiwbina who took a 15 shots to 6 lead on the 12th end. Rhiwbina extended their lead over the final ends to finish the game with the final rink score of Abergavenny 9. Rhiwbina 22.
Over on rink 3 Mary Evans, John Vale, Lesley Radley and Julia Salter went 12-0 after 3 ends but managed to recover to 6-12 after the 7th end. It was 16-11 to Rhiwbina on the 13th end and with Abergavenny only scoring another single on the 16th end the final rink score was Abergavenny 12. Rhiwbina 21.
The final match score was Abergavenny 33. Rhiwbina 64.

On Saturday the Ladies were playing a Mary Wardle League game and the Men were in action playing a East Monmouthshire Bowling Association League game.
The Ladies were playing against Blackwood Blue in the Mary Wardle game. Jenni MacGregor, Sue Pritchard, Lesley Radley and Mary Evans had a steady start being level at the 4th end at 2 shots apiece, this changed on the 5th end when they scored a 5 and by the 12th end they were leading by 17 shots to 7. The Blackwood Ladies didn't have any answers and the final match score was Abergavenny 26. Blackwood Blue 11.
The Men were playing against Chepstow in their game. On rink 2 Rob Pursey, Peter Steed, Courtney Hemmings and Ian McCuish had a good start and were leading 6-2 on the 7th end. They managed to keep their momentum and still had the lead on the 14th end at 11-8, this increased to 15-9 on the 18th end before Chepstow made a late fightback and nearly levelled the score on the last end with the final rink score Abergavenny 15. Chepstow 14.
On rink 3 John Vale, Steve File, Ron Harris and Stephen Williams had a great start and by the 7th end were leading by 12 shots to 3. Chepstow then won 6 of the next 8 ends to make it a very close game at 14-13 in favour of Abergavenny who then won 5 of the last 6 ends and win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 26. Chepstow 14.
On rink 4 John Woodier, Fred Mutimer, Chris Perry and Tom Cobb won the first 5 ends to go 8 shots ahead before losing the next 5 to then be level with Chepstow at 8 shots each. Abergavenny took a small lead until the 14th end when Chepstow scored a 5 to take the lead at 14-11, Abergavenny kept within striking distance until the last 2 ends when Chepstow scored a 5 and a 3 to make the final rink score Abergavenny 15. Chepstow 24.
On rink 5 John MacGregor, Mike McGonagall, Richard Richards and Paul Jones won on the second end but Chepstow won the rest up to the 8th end to take an 11 shots to 1 lead. Abergavenny tried to respond and were only 4 shots behind on the 16th end at 10-14. Chepstow managed to retain this lead and the final rink score was Abergavenny 14. Chepstow 18.
A very close and competitive game which finished as a draw with both sides scoring 70 shots.
