The Abergavenny Ladies were at Croesyceillog for their League game on Tuesday 28th.
On the rink of Sue Pritchard, Mary Vale, Julia Salter and Sue Williams after losing the first end they won the next 2 for a 7-1 lead. Croesyceillog came back strongly to win the next 4 ends and take a 10-7 lead, it was a short lived lead as Abergavenny took the next 2 ends with a 4 and a 6 to go 17-10 in front. Croesyceillog kept chipping away at the Abergavenny lead and were only 2 behind at the 14th end at 18-16. Abergavenny then stormed ahead by winning the last 4 ends and win the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 30. Croesyceillog 16.
The rink of Diane Bevan, Val Jones, Mandy Harris and Lesley Radley kept neck and neck with Croesyceillog for the first 8 ends when they were leading by 6 shots to 5. Croesyceillog then started to outscore Abergavenny and by the 14th end they had taken a 13-7 lead. Abergavenny managed to rally themselves and took control over the last 4 ends by winning them all and winning the rink with the score of Abergavenny 14. Croesyceillog 13. The final match score was Abergavenny 44. Croesyceillog 29.

On Wednesday the Men took on Caldicot in the East Monmouthshire Bowling Association League.
On the rink of Mike Collins, Steve File, Mike McGonagall and Tom Cobb it was a very close encounter with only single being scored for the first 12 ends with Abergavenny leading by 8 shots to 4. Caldicot were the first to score more than 1 with a 2 on the 13th end, Abergavenny got their own 2 on the 15th and followed it up with a 4 on the 16th and a 5 on the 18th and final end to win the rink with the score of Abergavenny 19. Caldicot 8.
On rink 2 John MacGregor, Peter Steed, Ron Harris and Mike Hayward were playing against a team of 3 Caldicot players. The game was very one sided after the first 3 ends when Caldicot were leading 3-1, after that Abergavenny won the next 11 ends to take a 20 shots to 3 advantage. Caldicot scored another single on the 15th end and Abergavenny won the last 3 ends so the final rink score was Abergavenny 25. Caldicot 4.
The rink of John Woodier, Fred Mutimer, Courtney Hemmings and Denis McDaid had a very close game with only one or two shots between the teams for the first 8 ends with Abergavenny being just ahead on 6-5. Abergavenny managed to creep 3 shots ahead but were caught and overtaken on the 12th end when Caldicot scored a 4 to make it 9-10. Abergavenny then went ahead again when they scored 4 on the 15th end to go 14-11. Caldicot then won the last 3 ends and by scoring a single on the last end got the rink win with the score of Abergavenny 14. Caldicot 15.
On rink 4 John Vale, Richard Richards, Stephen Williams and Ian McCuish were in control after 6 ends leading by 6-1. Caldicot managed to score a couple of 4's and by the 11th end were only 1 behind at 10-9. Again Abergavenny got a 5 shot lead only for Caldicot to reply with another 4, going into the last end Abergavenny were once more 5 shots ahead only for Caldicot to level the game when they scored a 5. The final rink score was Abergavenny 18. Caldicot 18.
The final match score was Abergavenny 76. Caldicot 45.
Abergavenny get 5.5 points and Caldicot 1.5 points.
On Thursday the Men were in action again playing Newport Athletic at Caerleon in the Monmouthshire BA League Division 4.
On the rink of Mike Collins, Steve File, Mike Hayward and Tom Cobb a steady start saw them leading by 5-2 after 6 ends. The lead had extended to 12-4 at the 12th end and although they only won 2 of the last 6 ends they came away with the rink win with the score of Abergavenny 16. Newport Athletic 9.
On rink 3 John MacGregor, Dave Hill, Denis McDaid and John Woodier were level at 4-4 after 6 ends. They kept in touch with Newport Athletic until the 14th end when the home team scored a 5 to make the score 14-7. Newport Athletic kept the lead over the last 4 ends and the final rink score was Abergavenny 10. Newport Athletic 19.
On the rink of Jimmy Harris, John Vale, Ron Harris and Gordon King it was all square on 7 ends at 5 all. Abergavenny then pulled away and by the 12th end had a lead of 13-6, Newport Athletic then pulled themselves together and won the last 6 ends scoring 9 shots in the process and winning the rink, the final score was Abergavenny 13. Newport Athletic 15.
Jack Vale, Peter Steed, Richard Richards and Stephen Williams were level at 4-4 after 7 ends and it was still even at the 10th end at 6 all. Abergavenny then took control of the game and dominated the last 8 ends only letting Newport Athletic win on 2 of them. Abergavenny won the rink with the final score of Abergavenny 21. Newport Athletic 8. The final match score was Abergavenny 60. Newport Athletic 51. 10 points to Abergavenny and 4 for Newport Athletic.
On Friday the Mixed Team went to play Barry Athletic in the South Wales Mixed League, it was played in strong winds on a lightning fast green.
On the rink of Mike Hayward,Mary Evans, Mandy Harris and Tom Cobb the hosts got off to a flying start by winning the first 6 ends for a 13-0 lead. They maintained the lead and were leading 19-6 on the 12th end, with far too much to do Abergavenny battled on and reduced the deficit to 10 shots with the final rink score of Abergavenny 12. Barry Athletic 22.
John MacGregor, Sue Pritchard, Lesley Radley and Ron Harris were 8-2 down after 6 ends which increased to 20-4 after 12 ends. The Barry team and conditions proved to be too much for Abergavenny and the final rink score was Abergavenny 11. Barry Athletic 26.
On the rink of Jenni MacGregor, Peter Steed, Val Jones and Sue Williams it was all square at 6 apiece after 9 ends. Barry Athletic then scored 10 shots over the next 4 ends followed by a 6 on the 15th end to seal the rink win with the final score of Abergavenny 9. Barry Athletic 33.
The final match score was Abergavenny 32. Barry Athletic 71.
On Saturday the GBL team were playing away against Bedwas & Trethomas. On the rink of Richard Richards, Mike Hayward, Mary Vale and Paul Jones Bedwas won the first 2 ends but Abergavenny replied by taking the next 5 to lead by 8 shots to 2. Bedwas scored 3 on the 8th end and after that for 7 ends singles were scored alternately by each side so the score at the 15th end was 12-8 to Abergavenny. The next 2 ends went to Bedwas with singles and two were shared with the last 2 ends being won by Abergavenny. The final rink score was Abergavenny 17. Bedwas & Trethomas 11.
The rink of John Newell, Ian McCuish, Roger Griffiths and Cath Badham fell behind in the initial 7 ends at 3-9 which extended to 19-3 by the 11th end. Some good ends saw Abergavenny reduce the deficit slightly but they had too much to do and so the final rink score was Abergavenny 13. Bedwas & Trethomas 26.
On the rink of John Vale, Charles Harper, Ian Turner and Gerald Parry Bedwas took a 1 shot lead at the 7th end of 5-4. Abergavenny began to fall behind but a 4 on the 14th bought them back into contention at 2 behind, three singles took them into the lead on the 17th end at 13-12. Bedwas then scored 5 on the 18th end followed by two singles to make the final rink score Abergavenny 14. Bedwas and Trethomas 19.
The final match score was Abergavenny 44. Bedwas & Trethomas 56. Two points for Abergavenny.
The MBA team were playing at Avenue Road against our old friends from Machen.
On rink 1 Jimmy Harris, John MacGregor, Dave Hill and Tom Cobb they got off to a good start and by scoring 6 on the 5th end it helped them to an 11-4 lead after 7 ends. Machen came back to 11-9 down before Abergavenny opened up a 19-9 advantage on the 13th end. Machen were unable to close the gap over the last 8 ends and the final rink score was Abergavenny 24. Machen 14.
On rink 2 Jack Vale, Rob Pursey, Courtney Hemmings and John Woodier won the first end, lost the next 5 and scored 4 on the 7th end to be tied at 6-6. Machen went ahead and at the 12th end were leading by 13-10, by the 16th end it was 19-14. The last 5 ends were extremely close but Machen held out to win the rink with the score of Abergavenny 17. Machen 23.
On rink 3 Mike Collins, Fred Mutimer, Ron Harris and Stephen Williams built an 8-2 lead after 7 ends and continued to dominate by leading 23 shots to 4 after 15 ends. There was not a lot Machen could do and the final rink score was Abergavenny 28. Machen 10.
On rink 4 Rob Poynter,Steve File, Denis McDaid and Mike McGonagall built-up a 7-3 lead after 7 ends. In a close game they managed to keep the advantage and at the 14th end it was 13-10, not a great deal changed over the last 7 ends despite some good play from both teams and the final rink score was Abergavenny 20. Machen 16.
The final match score was Abergavenny 89. Machen 63. 12 points for Abergavenny and 2 for Machen.
On Sunday the MBA team were in action once again this time of Crickhowell at Avenue Road.
On the rink of John MacGregor, Dave Hill, Mike Hayward and Denis McDaid Crickhowell got off to the better start and after 7 ends were leading 9-4, they continued to outscore Abergavenny and had extended their lead to 16-5 on the 12th end. Abergavenny staged a comeback by winning the next 7 ends and taking a 3 shot lead at 19-16, however Crickhowell weren't finished and won the last 2 ends to level the score and draw the rink with the score of Abergavenny 19. Crickhowell 19.
On rink 2 John Vale, Fred Mutimer, Courtney Hemmings and Stephen Williams were 9-4 in arrears after 7 ends, they continued to fall behind but by scoring 5 on the 14th end they got closer at 11-14. They got even closer on the 16th end at 13-14 but then fell behind again to lose the rink with the score being Abergavenny 14. Crickhowell 19.
On the rink of Mike Collins, John Newell, Mike McGonagall and Tom Cobb after being 6-3 down after 5 ends Abergavenny won the next 2 ends to take the lead on the 7th end at 9-6. This seemed to have kick started them because by the 14th end they had a lead of 20-12, they restricted Crickhowell to winning only 2 more ends to make the final rink score Abergavenny 28. Crickhowell 15.
On rink 1 Jimmy Harris, Rob Pursey, Ian McCuish and Ron Harris were only 2 behind on the 7th end at 6-4, by the 14th end they had levelled the score at 11-11 and went 1 ahead on the next end, dropping 8 shots over the next 3 ends put them 19-12 down. Scoring a 3 on the 18th gave them a chance but Crickhowell dashed all hopes by getting 6 on the 20th end. The final rink score was Abergavenny 16. Crickhowell 25.
The final match score was Abergavenny 77. Crickhowell 78.
So a win for Crickhowell by the narrowest of margins.
