Tree pose for beginners - if you haven’t been practising balancing then get ready to wobble a lot. Go with it, there’s nothing wrong.

Aim to build your balance over time, rather than getting the raised foot high. Such as, using blocks or keeping the raised foot quite low. Wobbling happens when you’re out of practice at balancing or tired, thirsty, can’t focus etc. I have good and bad wobble days!

When you feel your balance is good then you can raise the bent leg higher if you want and see what happens when you raise your arms. If it’s all under control, you can enjoy the stillness or have some fun by trying to sway in the breeze or shake your hands.

Some days you might have to go back to the first step, but don’t worry about that. Balancing is an important part of asana practise.

Beginners - squat/malasana

Adapting a pose to what you can do, and knowing what things not to do, are important parts of a beginners practice. Videos often focus on the pose that works for experienced, fit and flexible people but many beginners aren’t ready for that version at first.

Here’s my take on malasana. Let me know if it helps

Hatha Yoga is more than stretches on the mat, extending into a way of life: how we treat ourselves and others with compassion, embracing a connection to our breath and body to (try to) enjoy a calmer mind - it takes work, and practice, without expectation or ego.

On the mat, ā€˜Sometimes’ we hold the poses for longer*

We look after our bodies through movement. Engaging parts of ourselves we might have neglected, celebrating parts that move well, and not performing or competing for or with others. Each practice is personal, and as individual as everything else you do.

*sometimes = always…especially savasana
