It's election week at the SU!

I am currently the SU Wellbeing Officer but I am running for Union President for next year so that I can focus on my true passion, which is sustainability.

This year I helped push the University to commit to divesting from fossil fuels and I have been working on opening a Community Fridge in the SU to tackle food waste on campus and to offer free food to students. I would really love to be around for another year to make sure that the fridge opens.

If I were elected as president I would like to start up a voucher system for students who have very little money left in their bank account, that enables them to get a free meal at the end of the day from the Arts Centre. The Arts centre often have to throw away trays of hot food at the end of the day as the food cannot be kept and reheated.

I have plans to run a Boycott Barclays campaign and get the university to stop banking with Barclays, as they are the number one investor in fossil fuels. The uni has signed the climate emergency and committed to divestment yet they bank with Barclays?

I would also like to help combat student mental health problems though creating opportunities to connect with nature and the local community. Creating a connection with nature not only helps individuals wellbeing but it also makes people become more conscious about the environment and care about the effect they are having on it. I have experienced myself this year how fulfilling volunteering can be and at Aber SU we offer some really great volunteering opportunities. So, I would like to improve the advertisement and increase engagement with volunteering, which I think will also really help to improve student loneliness problems.

Please also consider re-electing Wojtek as Opportunities Officer, Chloe as Academic Affairs Officer and vote Connor for Wellbeing - you can read their full manifestos, and mine, on the SU website.

If you would like to see me elected as union president, please vote me number one this week and share this post. You can vote through app aber or a link that will be sent to you through email today.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

During the lockdown last March, AUWHC and AUMHC travelled the distance to Benidorm to keep members active and raise money for Mind Aberystwyth.

This lockdown, AUWHC have decided to travel 870 miles, the distance of the Welsh coast path through running, cycling and walking in their local areas🚶‍♀️🚴🏼‍♀️ We aim to complete this by the end of January!

We have chosen to raise money for West Wales Poundies. This is a charity which is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in Welsh council pounds. It would be amazing if anyone could sponsor us and donate money to help this worthy cause!

A page will be set up in the coming days for donations.

We are looking forward to raising money for West Wales Poundies and keeping our members active during this lockdown! Here are some pictures of our members with their own dogs 🐶

Today is World Mental Health Day and AUWHC alongside AUMHC wanted to share everything we are doing this year to support each other.

After last years success, we have continued our partnership with Mind Aberystwyth. We are currently planning lots of fundraising ideas for this year to raise money for them.

This year we are also focusing on raising awareness about mental health and breaking the stigma. Our aim is to support all of our members and others in the student community. We are looking forward to our return to hockey and being able to support each other on and off the pitch during these difficult times.

Over the lockdown period, we teamed up with Aberystwyth University Men’s Football Club to create a video where our members discussed the impact of sport on mental health. This video helped raise awareness about ways in which sport has helped people and we aim for hockey to continue to help students suffering with mental health.

This year our committees have been given the opportunity to take part in mental health awareness training which will help prepare us for certain situations and know how we can support our members! This training is an amazing opportunity for the club and we are hoping that this will help us support each other even more.

After last years success, we are pleased to announce that Aberystwyth University Men’s and Women’s Hockey Club will be continuing our partnership with Mind Aberystwyth.

Last year we raised over £3000 for Mind Aberystwyth with the help of Aberystwyth University Netball Club and Aberystwyth University Football Club.

This year we hope to continue to raise money for Mind, as well as raising awareness about mental health. We are hoping to introduce Mental Health Ambassadors to our clubs which will help improve the way in which we deal with mental health.

We are already in the process of planning our events this year and more ways to raise money for Mind, as well as helping break the stigma surrounding mental health in sport and student life!

We are looking forward to sharing all our plans with everybody soon! Enjoy some pictures of us supporting Mind Aberystwyth last season! #tîmaber

As this month is Pride Month, AUWHC and AUMHC are working together to support the LGBT community 🏳️‍🌈

Studies, undertaken by the National Union of Students have highlighted:

- 46.8% of LGBT students who do not participate in sport find the culture around sport alienating or unwelcoming.
- 41.9% had a negative experience at school which has meant they don’t want to get involved at college or university.
- 14.3% had experienced homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia which has put them off from participating.

These statistics have inspired our clubs to support the LGBT community by implementing the Zero Tolerance policy to show that homophobia, biphobia and transphobia abuse is unacceptable within our clubs.

From September we are asking all of our players and members to wear the Rainbow Laces as part of a way to show support and to raise money for Stonewall. We want to continue to make our hockey clubs a safe environment and to support everybody equally, regardless of sexuality.

Both AUWHC and AUMHC are proud to support the LGBT community and some of our members want to share their views on LGBT in sport, particularly hockey:

Molly Rowell, AUWHC, “AUWHC has been a massive part of my life and I’m proud to be able to say I’ve never felt I have to hide who I am with this club. The club has helped me to become more confident with who I am and accept myself more. The best part of being out in this club is that no one cares about your sexuality they just care about your ability to neck a pint 😉”

Anonymous, AUWHC, “I have never felt that I had to hide who I was being part of AUWHC. I have always been able to be open about my sexuality and both clubs have accepted me with open arms. I'm proud to be part of such a diverse and accepting clubs”

Luke Archer, AUMHC: “Aberystwyth University Men’s and Women’s Hockey Club have implemented a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy which highlights that homophobic, biphobic and transphobic abuse is unacceptable and will not be tolerated within their clubs - I believe this shows how accepting the clubs are and that other sports clubs and societies should follow in their footsteps!

Since I joined AUMHC in 2017, I have always felt involved and part of the team despite being gay. I soon realised that my sexual orientation did not matter when I stepped onto the pitch and that I was treated as an equal by all my team mates. Even though members of the LGBTQ+ community in sport still encounter discrimination and abuse, I believe that AUMHC & AUWHC do a brilliant of supporting their members regardless of their sexuality.

AUMHC has a safe environment where members can speak openly about their sexual orientation. Additionally, both AUMHC & AUWHC advocate that hockey is for everyone, regardless of their sexuality and by supporting the Rainbow Laces campaign in 2020 we have not only raised money for Stonewall but removed any preconceived ideas that students may have regarding university sport.”

Beat is the UKs eating disorder charity, it became established in 1989 after merging with two other charities. They campaign to end the suffering that is caused by an eating disorder and provide a support for anyone effected. They run and assist with research to learn more about what causes eating disorders and how to treat them. They also provide guidance for those affected and those around them. Offering awareness training in schools and workplaces. They offer online support groups and regional support groups to help those affected, allowing them to talk to people who have similar experiences. They also run a phone and email helpline which is active 365 days of the year for anyone who needs it.
Every year around 130,000 people will fall ill with an eating disorder and in 2018-19 beats helpline managed to support just over a fifth of this number 28,732 and aim to help over 100,000 each year. Over Christmas their helplines supported 407 people, a lot of whom felt they could not speak to their families surrounding the issue. As well as providing helplines they work to change the governments policies to provide increased support for those suffering. In 2018-19 they managed to reduce the waiting times and improve access to support for children suffering in England, now 4 out of 5 children and young people in England will receive treatments within 4 weeks, or 1 week in a an urgent case. The government has also promised to provide more money for children and young peoples eating disorder services.
These are just some of the things they have achieved in the last few years but there is still a long way to go. If you would like to get in touch or show your support for the charity, then please visit the website via the link below:
