Message from the league welfare officer:
“Please see a note below from the LWO Andy Gould after a disturbing incident at one of our games last week. Great to see the coach on this occasion sensed something was not right and took the appropriate action.
FAO of Coaches and Parents.
On Sunday during a football match a man approached a parent claiming he was a scout for Manchester City.
After the match this person then approached a team coach and interrupted him doing his teams debrief, he claimed he was a scout from Manchester United & was interested in 2 of his players. During the coach’s conversation with this person some information that he was saying raised a red flag with the coach.
I was contacted by the coach to query who this person was and to confirm if he was an actual scout for Manchester United, I was able to confirm that this person has no association with Manchester United and I believe is not a scout for any club, he is a random person who decided for reasons unknown to attend watch children playing for football and impersonate a scout.
Based off the information provided to me, I immediately informed the safeguarding officers of both Manchester United and Manchester City, they have reported this incident directly to the FA Safeguarding department and have also got the Police involved.
I send this message out to remind everyone to please be vigilant and please note the following in relation to scout/spotters attending games.
A Football Scout Guide for Grassroots Coaches:
If you are a manager or a parent of a grassroots football team/player and you notice someone you don’t recognise watching the match, they may be a Football Scout.
Below is to give you an understanding of what to expect from that club scout/spotter.
- The Scout/Spotter should always carry their professional club identification.
- The badge will always show the club name/badge for whom they are representing, their photo, full name it will also have the current seasons date.
- All Scouts/Spotters must undergo an enhanced DBS check before they will be issued their ID badge.
My opinion is:
- Scouts should maker an effort to seek permission to attend games prior to attending a match.
- Where this is not possible upon arrival or at the earliest convenience, they should introduce themselves and show their ID badge to the coaches of both teams and if one is present a club/league committee member.
- If a scout identifies a player and wants further information the scout should NEVER ask a third party about the player, they want details of, NEVER directly go to the players parent/guardian
- They must approach the coach of the team for whom the player plays for and ask permission to talk to the players parent/guardian.
- If permission is given to speak to the parent/guardian, the scout must introduce themselves and present their identification card to the relevant parent/guardian before any details are exchanged.
- If no identification is shown I strongly advise you ask the person to leave and report the individual to the league as soon as possible.
Kind regards
Andy Gould

"If you give a child a ball"
If you give a child a ball, they will want goalposts to go with it. Then, they will probably spend hours begging you to go out in the garden to play with them, even though you may want to sit on the sofa and watch tv. They will insist. And their insistence will win.
And when a child gets a kit, they will need shin pads and boots to go with it. And a TEAM…..
And then life as you know it will end.
There will be no more lazy weekends watching tv. You will see more sunrises than you ever thought possible. Every spare minute of your time will be spent taking your child to training and games.
And your house will be a mess. And your car will be dirty. All because you gave a kid who has a ball.
Your weekends will be spent freezing or burning to death or getting soaked on a sideline. And their weekends will be spent gaining confidence and friends, and learning new skills and having fun.
And you will be there the day they score their first pass, first goal, or save and also their first foul . And they will make you SO proud.
And right before your eyes, your little child will be transformed from the baby who kicked or bounced the ball and fell in love with the sport.
When you give a child a ball, you give them more than just a ball. You give them a sport, and talent, and hope, and dreams, and friends, a new family, a place to learn about life, room to grow as a person where they can push their limits, and bravery, and courage and LIFE, and memories. And they will have ALL of these things, simply because you gave a child a ball.
Because you gave a child a ball, you too will develop new/lifelong friendships, developed solely from the same passion for the game and love of your team. You will cheer together. Because you gave a child a ball.
Then one day, many years from today….they will be in their room and a ball will roll out from an old dusty bag underneath their bed. And they will pick it up and realise instantly that when you gave that child a ball, you also gave them a childhood that they would never forget. And then they will hug you, and your eyes may leak – because you realise that everything YOU gave up along the way…..was worth it!
