Oh Hello There...

Today is my birthday, and I'm currently en route to the European Grief Conference, in Porto!! I've had worse birthdays 😄

I'm going to take you with me, so keep an eye on my stories to see what actually goes on at a grief conference... you might be surprised!

Any tips for Porto... I'm very much looking forward to being a tourist for a few days.

Grief and Bereavement will now be mandatory component of the curriculum in all state schools in England and Wales - but what does this actually mean?

This change isn't about dwelling on sadness, it's about building emotional literacy, normalising experiences, and giving children and young people the tools to navigate these inevitable losses. Something I wish I'd been taught before I experienced the death of my dad, at the age of 11.

I connected with John Adams, who has been influential in getting this bill through parliament and approved, recently and was delighted to welcome him on an episode of Grief Unedited. John is so passionate about the importance of good grief education, and he talks in his episode about why this is to important to him...

Often with sudden loss, the intense element of shock can take a long time to subside. Sudden and unexpected death's can also be traumatic in nature, and as such can mean people need earlier access to bereavement support, to help them make sense of their experience.

In this podcast episode of Grief Unedited, Ashley talks about her experience of sudden and unexpected losses.

Today is a big day in the bereavement world...

Today see's the mandatory requirement for Grief and Bereavement to feature in the national curriculum in all state funded schools across England and Wales as part of RSHE.

On average 1 in 29 school aged children experience the loss of a parent or sibling, and for too long, we've not appropriately supported children and young people to navigate these life experiences. I was honoured to meet with John Adams, on my podcast Grief Unedited. John has been one of the pioneers of this movement, and his tireless campaigning is undoubtedly part of the reason this has finally be approved.

As a proud Scot, I'm hopeful that our Scottish Government will follow this lead.
