Royal Engineers Winter Sports

Regular and reserve Sappers from around the Corps participated in Ex SILVRETTA SAPPER's second iteration in February, following a highly successful debut in 2025, once again under the leadership of . The initial week focused on honing ski touring skills under challenging conditions, while the arrival of two British mountain guides in the second week shifted focus towards Ski Mountaineering.

The exercise served as an endurance test, providing invaluable experience in backcountry skiing, glacier traversal and crevasse rescue techniques, ultimately leading to successful summits of several peaks, including the renowned Piz Buin.

Seven Sappers recently represented the Corps at the inaugural British Army Skimo Champs and achieved some fantastic results across the board in the male and female competitions.

The camp focused on learning slick transitions, mountain awareness and endurance training and culminated in a three day competition phase with over 30 athletes from the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Ex SNOW SAPPER 2026 took place last month in Alpendorf, Austria and achieved great success. 200 sappers developed their skills by completing Ski Foundation Levels 1, 2 or 3 on their pathways to becoming Ski Instructors, assisted by expert guidance from 36 of our very own Ski Instructors.

Congratulations to the team on the delivery of such valuable training in the Corps largest participation winter sport activity of the season.

RE NORDIC has returned after a well deserved Christmas break! 💪

We’ve been battling the chilly -20 temperatures in Bessans France🥶 and adjusting to the altitude🗻

❄️The week has focused on easing the teams back into skiing and shooting. Today consisted of a short classic race creating some seriously impressive ice beards❄️

We have had a wide range of conditions the last few days from heavy snow ☃️to lows of -26 🥶

⛷️The advanced skiers have been testing their limits in races against the local clubs. ⛷️
