Campaigning to allow tennis to be played on Lesbury tennis court.

🎾 The court was in use from 1985-2015.

🎾 It is now solely used as a car park for Lesbury Bowling Club (formerly Lesbury Bowling and Tennis Club)

It's so sad to see these photos of a thriving Lesbury Tennis Club where we are now in the position that:

☑️ There is a clear and evidenced demand for the tennis club to be restarted.

☑️ The site is now presumably unused until the start of the next bowls season, whilst the weather is certainly mild enough for tennis to be played!

☑️ The tennis group have not asked for any help with funding to improve the state of the tennis court.

❎ The village hall committee who manage the site, and have done so much good for the community, have consistently refused to even meet with the tennis group to discuss our ideas.

We are considering how to take things forward in light of the above - in a consensual and constructive manner- and grateful for any ideas or thoughts...

A nice crisp autumn day for tennis.
With the bowls season now over, and the court not needed for parking, what a shame that the families and children of Lesbury are deprived of the opportunity of some fresh air and exercise😞

Barn Elms Sports Centre tennis courts reopen after renovation - Wandsworth Borough Council 06/09/2025

Happy kids and families as another tennis club refurbishment is successfully completed.

Just walked past the Lesbury court (which was empty) and you can so easily imagine similarly happy faces in Lesbury in the near future!

P.S. the site has been quiet over August but we have lots of ideas for next steps. Watch this space!

Barn Elms Sports Centre tennis courts reopen after renovation - Wandsworth Borough Council The tennis courts at Barn Elms Sports Centre have officially reopened following major renovation works led by Wandsworth Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), funded by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project.

Tennis Court / Multi-Use Sports Area Reopened and Available for Use 23/08/2025

Congratulations to Great Longstone Parish Council for the successful reopening this month of their Tennis Court / Multi Use Sports Area and the delivery of new tennis and pickleball nets.

Funding came from Sports England and Better Derbyshire Fund Grants, Little Longstone Parish Meeting and Great Longstone Parish Council.

At a cost of over £20,000 it's slightly more than the cost we have been quoted to transform the tennis court in Lesbury.

David Smith MP has offered to help (thank you) with exploring funding opportunities when/if we have permission to play tennis on the tennis court.

Village tennis club 'thriving' with hundreds of new members 20/08/2025

A nice story here of a village tennis club which was at the point of folding and is now thriving.

The courts were in a terrible state but with the help of the local parish council the courts were resurfaced and now there is a very successful village tennis club:

"When the club was handed back to the parish council it only had around 12 members but now it has more than 200"

If you've seen the latest Lesbury Parish Council minutes you will note that they don't support our plans. “The poor condition of the facility and the cost to bring it back to a safe space” is a reason given for not supporting us. Worth bearing in mind perhaps that we have never asked for any funding or financial support from Lesbury Parish Council to improve our court, as our business plan didn't require it.

Village tennis club 'thriving' with hundreds of new members This time last year East Bergholt Tennis Club was almost at the point of folding, but 12 months on the club is "thriving" and has more…

Lovely to see the president of Lesbury Bowling AND TENNIS Club (yes, that is what it used to be called!) thanking members of the tennis section for raising money to pay for the newly resurfaced court.

I wonder how those who helped pay for the refurbished court would feel now that tennis cannot be played, even when the site is not needed for any other purpose? They ended up funding a new car park!

🎾 CAMPAIGN FOR JUNIOR TENNIS ENTERS 91st YEAR🎾

Hopefully everyone enjoys the Lesbury Church fete this afternoon.

The weather for the church fete in 1935 was unfortunately just as threatening.

The object of the fete that year was to raise money for the building of a tennis court for youngsters in the village.

Ninety years later, there is no court for youngsters 😥

Rev. Jackson's comments back then that bringing tennis would take a lot of patience ring true today "we have put our hand to the plough, and on no account are we going to turn back now"

I'm sure the ice cream provided by Miss Carse went down well!

🎾 WHAT IS THE BEST SITE FOR TENNIS IN LESBURY? 🎾

As the old tennis court is now being used during the bowls season as a car park, a fair challenge is whether we would be better off looking for a new site? Isn't the old court in such a state now, that a fresh start with better facilities would be preferable?

Whatever the challenges with the old tennis court though, they would surely be far, far less than starting again from scratch. If a concern is the cost, how much do you think a new facility would be in comparison to relaying the court (which might not even be necessary)? If the concern is lack of demand, shouldn't you start small and show that demand?

This is not a new debate. The tennis courts in Lesbury were where the cricket ground is until 1955!. When tennis was at its peak in Lesbury (partially as a result of the problems at that time with the courts in Alnwick) different options were explored 25 years ago, including near the football pitch and off longhoughton road. Alternative sites were again considered in 2015. None ever got off the ground.

The tennis court may be imperfect but it proved to be fantastic for beginner, casual, kids tennis.

Councillor Phillipson who chaired the Construction Committee that built the court in the first place, defended the court in 2000, 26 years later, when the Lesbury Sports and Recreation Club were looking to build new courts and a bowling green elsewhere in Lesbury which the Parish Council didn't support:

🎾"We did of course accept that the bowling green and tennis court did not meet competition standards. Our objective was to provide facilities where residents could relax and enjoy themselves in very pleasant surroundings"🎾

That objective is surely one that could be realized once again.
