Every beginner gets bored of basics, every master lives by them.

You wonder why you have to throw the same punch, the same block, the same kata thousands of times. It feels pointless. You want new, fancy techniques. But your sensei knows a truth you haven't learned yet.

In a real fight, under real pressure, fear wipes your mind clean. You forget everything complex, everything flashy. Only what is burned deep into your muscle memory survives.

And that is only the basics. Basics are not beginner techniques, they are survival techniques. That is why we repeat them forever. So that when pressure erases everything else, your basics are still there to save you.

Something I’ve been thinking about recently…

We put a lot of emphasis on what our children learn at school, and quite rightly so.

But what about everything they learn outside school?

Clubs and activities can give children experiences that you simply can’t get from a classroom.

It might be music, football, dance, swimming, drama, art or martial arts. It doesn’t really matter what it is. Having something that they enjoy, turn up for regularly and gradually improve at can be incredibly valuable.

I think martial arts has a few things that make it particularly interesting.

Children learn to listen, concentrate and work with others. They learn discipline, but also patience. They learn that sometimes you won’t get something right straight away, and that’s OK. You keep practising.

They also get to experience being a beginner, making mistakes, overcoming challenges and eventually looking back and realising just how far they’ve come.

And perhaps one of the nicest things is watching a child’s confidence grow.

Not the loud, look-at-me kind of confidence, but the quiet confidence that comes from knowing, “I couldn’t do this before, but now I can.”

I’m not suggesting every child needs to do martial arts. Far from it.

But I do think it’s worth asking ourselves as parents…

What are our children doing outside school that helps them grow, not just academically, but as people?

Sometimes those lessons stay with them for a lot longer than anything they learn from a textbook.
