Autumn is here, and while the leaves start to fall and the evenings get darker, your lawn is still busy behind the scenes. 🍂

In fact, autumn is a really important time for your grass. Beneath the surface, roots are continuing to grow, fungi are helping recycle nutrients, and tiny soil organisms are working away to keep the ground healthy.

✂️ Growth may slow down, but regular mowing helps keep your lawn healthy and tidy. Keeping cuts to around a third of the grass height at a time helps your lawn stay strong and recover more easily.

🦔 Spotted a hedgehog in your garden during the day?

Hedgehogs are usually most active at night, so a daytime visitor can sometimes be a sign that they need a little extra help.

👀 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞

• Is it walking slowly, wobbling, lying still, exposed, or appearing confused?

• These can be signs that a hedgehog may be struggling and needs help.

🦔 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬

• Gently approach and see whether it curls up, moves away or reacts normally.

• Look out for injuries, flies or eggs on its body, breathing difficulties, or signs of weakness.

💧 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥

• Provide a shallow dish of fresh water, not milk, as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant.

• Contact a local hedgehog rescue or wildlife rehabilitator for advice.

🌿 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲

• A hedgehog out in the early morning or late afternoon may simply be passing through or looking for food.

• Avoid disturbing it unless there are signs it needs help.

For your garden, you can help hedgehogs by leaving a small gap under fences (around 13cm), providing water, avoiding slug pellets, and creating sheltered areas with logs, leaves, or a hedgehog house.

If you’ve noticed small coils or mounds of soil appearing across your lawn, you’re likely looking at worm casts, and while they might not be the prettiest sight, they’re actually a sign of a busy ecosystem beneath your grass. 🍃

Earthworms play an important role in lawn health by helping to improve soil structure and recycle nutrients. However, on closely mown lawns, large numbers of worm casts can become frustrating, especially when they get flattened and spread across the grass.

Here are a few ways to help manage them:

🪱 𝐖𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐲 - Dry worm casts can be brushed away more easily without smearing soil across your lawn.

🍂 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 - Removing fallen leaves and excess organic matter can help reduce the food source that attracts worms to the surface.

🌱 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - Aerating your lawn can help relieve compaction, improve drainage and create healthier growing conditions beneath the surface.

✂️ 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 - Raising your mowing height slightly during periods of high worm activity can help reduce the impact of casts on your lawn.

Remember, worms are valuable helpers in your garden, the aim isn’t to remove them, but to keep their activity balanced while maintaining a healthy lawn. 🌿

It might look like your grass is made up of thousands of separate plants, but beneath the soil there is a whole underground ecosystem helping it thrive. Fungi called mycorrhizae can form connections with grass roots, creating a partnership where both organisms benefit. 🍃

These tiny fungal networks can extend beyond the reach of grass roots, helping plants access water and nutrients from the soil. In return, the grass provides the fungi with sugars produced through photosynthesis, creating a natural exchange beneath your lawn.

While your lawn may look like a simple carpet of grass, there’s a busy world working away beneath the surface every day. 🌎

Did you know the word "lawn" has an interesting history that goes back hundreds of years? 📜

It comes from the Middle English word launde, which meant a glade, open space, or clearing in a woodland. This, in turn, was borrowed from the Old French lande, meaning heath, moorland, or open country.

Originally, a lawn wasn't a carefully maintained patch of grass. It simply referred to an open area within or alongside woodland. 🌳

Before lawn mowers, keeping a lawn short often relied on sheep, cattle, or scythes. The first practical mechanical lawn mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Budding in Gloucestershire, England. 🍃

We hope you’ve all had a brilliant summer enjoying your garden! Although it’s not over just yet, here are some useful tasks that your garden will be grateful for as we get closer to the colder months. ❄️

🍃 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐬 - Remove heavy layers of leaves from lawns, patios and borders to prevent moss growth and slippery surfaces.

🌱 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Aeration, scarification and overseeding can all improve lawn health and encourage stronger growth before winter.

🌷 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐛𝐬 - September onwards is a great time to plant bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and tulips, they’ll establish underground before putting on a display next spring.

✂️ 𝐓𝐢𝐝𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 - Remove dead flowers and cut back overgrown plants, but leave some seed heads where possible to provide food for birds and shelter for insects.

🌿 Prepare for colder weather - Protect tender plants, clean garden tools and check pots, fences and structures before winter weather arrives.

A little preparation now can help your garden cope throughout autumn and winter, ready for you to enjoy in spring.
