1ST XV IN SHIELD MATCH
The 1st XV welcomed Carrick to Violetbank today for a National Shield Round 2 match.
The Maybole club are the current holders of the Shield and are unbeaten this season so far in the league, so the Annan lads knew this would be a tough battle.
The weather was a bit better than last week, cold, but the sun did make an appearance!
Before the match, the teams held a minute's silence for former player Eric Thomson, who sadly passed away earlier this week. RIP Startled.
To keep it short, it was 0-14 to the visitors after the first quarter as Carrick scored 2 converted tries in the 9th and then 18th minutes of the match. Annan had a couple of chances but solid defence kept them out.
And it was 5 v 26 at half-time as the 2nd quarter followed a similar path to the 1st, with Carrick taking their chances and Annan not managing to take all of theirs.
There was a small glimmer of hope though, as Lucas White, on his 1st XV debut, popped up with a great try with a few minutes left in the half.
Earlier in the season, Carrick had come down to Violetbank in the league and built a similar healthy half-time lead before Annan hit back in the 2nd. Could Annan do it again this time?
Answer - alas, no
Annan scored early thanks to a well-worked try from Aaron Carmichael, converted by James Kirby to take it to 12-26 but that was as close as Annan got.
Carrick scored not long after to take it to 12-33.
Still 30 mins to play but Carrick extended their lead and it finished 12-47
Congratulations to Carrick, who go into the last 16 draw and are still on course for a league and shield double
The Youth boys chose Bradley James as their Annan Man of the Match for his defensive work alongside a couple of try-saving tackles!
And Carrick's No 12 for his strong ball carrying.
Thanks to the Youth Committee and Alison for organising today 🖤💛
Annan now have next Saturday off as the Scotland v New Zealand take precedence over the Saturday rugby schedule in Scotland!
They then travel to Strathendrick the following Saturday as the lads get back to the more important issue of the West 1 league. Who needs the distraction of the Shield! :)
Enjoy the after-match beers lads.
And thanks as always for the home support.
