What a fantastic night for Gretna FC 2008 Ladies & Girls at the A Dad, His Lad & His Lad Lower Leagues of Scottish Football Awards!

A huge congratulations to our very own Sophie Mitchell, who was crowned:

🌟🏆 WOMEN’S YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR 🏆🌟

An incredible achievement for Sophie and thoroughly deserved. To receive recognition like this from across the lower leagues of Scottish football is something she should be extremely proud of.

And the recognition didn’t stop there! 👏

To have three of our players recognised on the night is a fantastic achievement for the girls and for everyone connected with Gretna.

Sophie, Abbie and Jordan have all represented the club brilliantly, and we couldn’t be prouder to see their hard work, commitment and performances recognised.

This Sunday, Gretna FC 2008 Ladies & Girls are back in action as we make the short trip to Galabank to face Annan Athletic Ladies in the League Cup Group Stage. ⚽

Asked to step into an unfamiliar role at left-back, Danni put in a fantastic shift for the team against a very strong Dalkeith Thistle side.

She worked tirelessly, battled for everything and showed exactly the kind of attitude and commitment we want to see — putting the team first and giving everything until the final whistle. 💪

🏆🖤🤍 SCOTTISH CUP | MATCH REPORT 🤍🖤🏆

Dalkeith Thistle CFC Ladies 9–1 Gretna FC Ladies & Girls

Our Scottish Cup journey came to an end this afternoon as Gretna fell to a 9–1 defeat away to a strong Dalkeith Thistle CFC side in the Second Preliminary Round.

The final scoreline makes for difficult reading, but it doesn’t tell the full story of the effort, determination and commitment shown by the Gretna players who made the journey.

Once again, we travelled without a number of key players through injury and unavailability, leaving the squad stretched and requiring several players to take on different and unfamiliar roles.

Dalkeith started strongly and showed their quality going forward, creating opportunities and taking their chances well as they established control of the tie.

Despite finding ourselves behind, Gretna continued to compete and got on the scoresheet in the 28th minute, giving the travelling side something to celebrate. ⚽🖤🤍

The challenge became about staying together, continuing to work and refusing to give up.

And that’s exactly what the girls did.

Dalkeith continued to threaten, but Gretna battled throughout and kept going right through to the final whistle. On a demanding afternoon, every player who pulled on the shirt gave everything they had for the team.

🌟 PLAYER OF THE MATCH — DANNI MULLEN 🌟

Today’s Player of the Match went to Danni Mullen, who stepped in and filled the left-back position for the team.

Playing out of position against difficult opposition, Danni worked tirelessly, competed throughout and showed exactly the attitude we needed when the squad was stretched.

A fantastic shift and a thoroughly deserved POTM. 👏🖤🤍

There were also several performances which deserve special recognition.

🧤 Abbie produced a number of important saves in goal, denying Dalkeith on several occasions and continuing to stand strong when called upon.

🖤🤍 Our captain Jordan showed her versatility and leadership by playing in three different positions during the match as we tried to shore things up. Whatever was asked of her, she stepped up and did it for the team.

💪 And huge credit must go to Ronnie, who took a heavy blow to the ribs but somehow battled through the pain and completed the full 90 minutes despite being in considerable discomfort.

That takes some determination and commitment to your teammates.

We hope you’re okay, Ronnie, and recovering well. 🖤🤍

But ultimately, the biggest shout-out has to go to the entire Gretna team.

With players missing, people playing out of position and a very difficult afternoon unfolding, nobody stopped working and nobody stopped trying.

There will undoubtedly be a lot of tired legs and sore bodies tomorrow, but the girls can hold their heads up knowing they gave everything they had.

🎙️ MANAGER’S THOUGHTS

“Obviously the scoreline is difficult to take. Nobody enjoys losing a football match, particularly in the Scottish Cup, but I don’t think the final score tells the whole story of the effort these girls put in today.

“Once again we travelled without a number of key players through injury and unavailability, which left us having to ask people to fill different roles and play in unfamiliar positions. Every single one of them just got on with it.

“Dalkeith were a very good side. They moved the ball well, created opportunities and were clinical when those chances came, so we have to give them a lot of credit.

“There are a few individual performances that deserve recognition. Abbie made a number of excellent saves and denied them several times. She kept going and continued making saves right through the game.

“Jordan played in three different positions for us today as we tried to shore things up. That’s what you want from your captain. Wherever we asked her to play, she went there, worked hard and tried to help the players around her.

“Ronnie deserves massive credit as well. She took a really sore one to the ribs and was clearly in a lot of pain and discomfort, but she battled through and somehow completed the 90 minutes. Hopefully she’s okay because she certainly put her body on the line for the team today.

“Danni thoroughly deserved Player of the Match. We asked her to fill in at left-back and she gave us absolutely everything. She put the team first, worked tirelessly and never stopped.

“But my biggest praise goes to the whole team. Every player who made the journey today deserves credit. They kept working, kept battling and kept trying to help each other right until the final whistle.

“There will be a lot of sore bodies tomorrow because the girls left everything they had out there.

“Results like this hurt, but you learn a lot about people when things aren’t going your way. I’m proud of the players who turned up today, pulled on the Gretna shirt and kept going for each other.

“We’ll take it on the chin, recover, regroup and get back to work. Our Scottish Cup journey is over, but there’s still plenty of football ahead of us this season.” 🖤🤍
