If you want fitness to last it needs to be part of your lifestyle

If it’s something external you sprinkle on top when you fancy it

You’ll never find consistency

It want make a difference

You won’t get anywhere

It doesn’t need to become your life
But it certainly needs to become part of it

There was a moment 3 years ago when I realised my fitness was gone.

I’d retired from football (in my 20s I know, too young for that Ben)
It was clashing hard with both my lifting and career at the time

But I still helped coach the same lads I called my mates for all those years (and still do coach today)

I laced up the boots a couple of times to help out when we struggled for players

But one game I came on and f**k me, I did not deliver.

20 minutes at the end of the game against a tired opposition
And I felt f**ked.
It was embarrassing.

I’d never felt so negatively about where I was
How hard it felt to run
How slow my reactions seemed to be
How inaccurate everything became

Literally a liability.

I’m not sure the lads could tell at the time
I like to think I operate pretty well under high fatigue

But I knew.

I carried it for a while
Not showing up as my best self for clients
An imposter when coaching the lads
I felt flat, awkward, even in social settings outside of fitness, that feeling followed me

After a few weeks I finally realised what was needed
What pivot I had to take

I needed to stop lifting to look good
I needed to starting training to feel good

To feel fit and fast
Yet strong and durable
Out-lift the runners, out-run the lifters

I wanted to be physically ready for anything, no matter what or when

CrossFit opened my eyes to this
Hybrid training gave me the tools to make it happen

Looking back now, going ‘hybrid’ was the best move I ever made

Consistency is what keeps you on track

When you have it, you’re riding wave after wave
Without it, barely a puff of air in your sails

The progress you can make feels slow, or non existent
Each step toward your goal feels like a massive effort
Because you lack the repetition for it to feel easy

But consistency is found in the repetition

Doing the do on repeat

And to confess
I’ve been off track with my consistency

Every gym session has taken convincing
Each run consumes more energy getting out the door
Why?

Because I’m lacking the reps

Working on new projects
Expanding my professional horizons
And as a result my training has slipped

You’ve probably seen I run every Sunday 9 times out of 10
Because thats an easy rep
Its engrained in me
But the rest is lacking

Thankfully I’m self aware of that
And the fix is simple

Not easy, but at least simple

Get to work

“We all have the same 24hrs”
Like f**k do we

Janice retired early and doesn’t need to work
Steve has the same job as you, but doesn’t have kids just yet
Michael is 23 and about to go travelling for a year, zero responsibilities

These three 24hr days aren’t necessarily harder or better than yours
They’re just different

You might have kids
Work 60+ hours a week
Be building something from nothing

Comparing your training days
To someone with double the hours free
Was never a fair fight

We’re all walking different paths in different directions
Some roads might just intersect for a while

Me?
I don’t have any kids yet, self employed, and I love my job
My 24 hours are a grind but man are they fun
