Brill v Buckingham 3rds 22.8.26
The season seems to have been dogged with near victories that did not quite happen. Brill batted first and had a disastrous first over loosing 2 wickets without scoring. A great century stand between Adam Krol (66)and Alex Eason (41) managed to salvage some respectability. Good to see both making runs! When Alex was out Andy Parke joined Adam for another good stand and the scoring rate was good. After Adam was dismissed Andy continued in a dominant but controlled knock before opened his shoulders and ended on 86 not out. Brill score of 240 looked like game on. And so it proved. Buckingham kept on or nearly on the required scoring rate and it was nip and tuck until at 237 for 6 and 3 overs remaining it looked like it was all done bar the shouting. Andy got a wicket, then in the last but one over Mark Woolrich got 2 more – clean bowled!! Game on we thought, but sadly with just 7 balls left Buckingham hit a 4 to win.
Ah-me. Sort of sums up our season…..

Here’s Simon Southall’s weekly match report

Buckland and Aston Clinton v Brill 15th August 2026
From the accounts I’ve heard, the team of 9 Brill players did not let the side down against top of the league Buckland. With Dale having a shattered thumb after 3 overs the team were down to 9 fielders. Will got three excellent boundary catches, our stand in wicket keeper Jerry got a good stumping, Bella got 3 wickets and a run out and the whole team fielded like demons. Alex Ball marshalled the troops very effectively and the whole team can be proud of their performance.
When faced with all the brickbats thrown at Brill and a very depleted batting line up, I was surprised to see Brill reach 129. A game the players can come home with an element of pride. Goodonya!

Brill v Thornborough 8th July 2026

Another good close game. A shame for us that we didn’t quite get the rub of the green. Our batters continue to be out of form with the usual exception of Dale and Damian, both scoring in their 40’s. The outfield remained greased lightening but the wicket was not as true as one would like. Batting first, the Brill score of 148 really did not look to be a difficult target to reach.
Thornborough started well scoring at 7 an over and making it look like a forgone conclusion. But almost inexplicably slowed right down and began to loose wickets, some because of the variable nature of the wicket. A couple of missed chances and a score 138 for 4 wickets down after 28 overs still looked like it was all over bar the shouting. Then wickets began to tumble and the scoring rate slowed to a snails pace. 4 wickets fell for 2 runs when Brian George was introduced into the attack, ending with 4 wickets for 14 runs in an excellent disciplined display. A performance which would warrant him a place in many teams as an opening bowler. Thornborough squeaked the last 9 runs in tight enthralling finish.

Simon Southall’s match report

Brill v Westbury 2nds 25th July 2026

If ever there was a day for the batters this was it! Glorious sunshine, rock hard outfield and a true wicket.
Brill batted first and after a respectable few overs, the nature of the game changed dramatically when Andy Parke (101) and Dale Sweetman (89) had a stand of 168 at a double quick scoring rate. This was a real treat to watch, Dale continuing his purple season with the bat and Andy at last getting into his stride after a barren spell. It was a pleasure to watch the Brill team and supporters with broad grins on their faces when he clocked up his hundred. We were all so pleased for him.

Phil Chanel also enjoyed the conditions with a quick fire 50 not out, leaving Brill with the mammoth total of 321 for 6 wickets. Nobody on the verandah could remember when that total had been achieved before.

Westbury did not seem to be daunted by the run chase and took advantage of the conditions to the full, reaching the target with 6 overs to spare. It is astonishing that both teams achieved such scores, and as a viewing spectacle I doubt we will see more runs in a 90 over game at Brill for a very long time.

Whilst the batting was spectacular, the 2 most spectacular moments were the catches that dismissed Andy (a crunching reflex caught and bowled) and Dale – the one handed catch leaning high over the fielders head on the boundary edge.

Dinton 2nds v Brill 18th July 2026

A fine game of Cricket, just a shame that the close finish didn’t go in Brill’s favour.

It was a pleasure to watch Damian Tapping & Jerry Mansfield calmly defending and then despatching the loose balls over the lightning fast outfield. Both got 50s in a stand of 125 to set us up in a comfortable position. However the only other score of note was 49 extras. A shame that no other batters managed to come off and our score of 205 all out was good, but left Dinton with a reasonable chance.
Throughout the Dinton innings wickets fell reasonably regularly but with one opening batter scoring 86 keeping the run chase just about on the cards. Jerry in one of his rare appearances as a bowler getting him caught behind. At 154 for 8 and running out of overs Brill were in a good position. However when Scott Bowler came in at number 10, he livened matters up. His 43 not out was achieved with gusto and Dinton got the winning runs with only a few overs to spare. He obviously is a far better batter than a normal number 10.
Of note, Darren got 6 for 47 - a good haul on this wicket. Dale was impressive in his efforts by haring after the third man and long leg balls and Chris Heslop gave a commendable performance in the field and with the bat.
