This 1974 cover could still spark debate.

Throwback to one of the most talked-about rivalries of the early tournament era… Joe Lewis and Steve (then Sanders) Muhammad were two of the premier American karate competitors of the late 1960s and early 1970s, pushing the limits of what full-contact competition would become.

Their paths crossed during the intense 1967–1969 tournament circuit profiled in *Karate Illustrated*—a time when the sport was still raw, evolving, and often unpredictable. Their matchups were high-profile, hard-fought, and at times controversial, reflecting the edge and intensity of the era.

One of their most discussed encounters came in the early 1970s within the competitive landscape surrounding the Black Karate Federation—a moment that remains part of karate’s early American legacy.

Two fighters. One era. A rivalry that helped define the foundation of modern kickboxing.

RIP Sir 🙏😢

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we mourn the passing of martial arts legend Chuck Norris—a true icon, a pioneer, and one of our own.

From his earliest days on the cover of Black Belt Magazine to becoming a global symbol of strength, discipline, and honor, Chuck never forgot his roots in the dojo. He inspired generations through his achievements as a champion, instructor, and beloved star, while always living by the code of respect and integrity.

His passing leaves a profound void in the martial arts community, but his legacy will live on in every student, every practitioner, and every life he touched.

Rest in power, Chuck—the world is bowing.
