19/08/2026

European Bowls Championships 2026
Llandrindod Wells, Wales, Sept 18th – 26th.

The squad selected to represent the Isle of Man at the European Bowls Championships later next month comprises 5 ladies and 5 men competing across all 4 disciplines (singles, pairs, triples and fours).
Representing the IOM ladies are:-
• Dee Lewis (Singles & Triples)
• Karen Slack (Pairs & Fours)
• Bernice McGreal (Pairs & Fours)
• Pam Makin (Triples & Fours)
• Caroline Whitehead (Triples & Fours)
And the Men’s squad is as follows:-
• Trevor Quayle (Singles & Triples)
• Kevin Quirk (Pairs & Fours)
• Clive McGreal (Pairs & Fours)
• Andy Dixon (Triples & Fours)
• David Slack (Triples & Fours)

This year’s European Championships will see 19 Nations compete at the Llandrindod Wells Bowls Club which is the headquarters of the Welsh Bowling Association with an impressive set up boasting 4 quality greens in the beautiful rural setting of mid Wales. Whilst this prestigious tournament is always a very competitive event what makes it even more important this year is the fact that it also determines the nations that will qualify for the World Championships at Leamington Spa in 2027. With the top 4 nations in each discipline eligible to qualify as the European entries there will be an additional edge to the competition with countries desperately vying for these places. Amongst the major bowls playing nations there are also entries from Bermuda and The Falkland Islands making their debut at these Championships.
With this tournament coming only weeks after the Commonwealth Games, where the Island had participants in both the men’s and ladies’ events at this showcase competition we were proud of the performance of Mark McGreal who managed to finish in 6th place overall in the Men’s Singles event demonstrating that the Island can compete at this elite level against the world’s best. Mark, unfortunately balancing his role a police office and young family commitments is not available for this competition. However, the island is being represented by a number of experienced bowlers with a wealth of international matches behind them in search of success at this event.
With travel and the competition itself spanning some 10 days the costs of attending the tournament are primarily met by self-funding of the team members themselves with some assistance from IOM Sport. On this occasion we also are delighted to announce that the team has been successful in attracting support from the IOM Steam Packet sponsored “Manx Community Assistance (MCA) Supported Travel Scheme”. This is a welcome boost for the participants and due recognition of the sport which had some great televised exposure from the recent Commonwealth Games. The team will travel to the event departing on the Steam Packet ferry on 17th Sept and will be pleased to share an account of their progress on this journey and performance at the tournament on its page “lawnbowlsiom”. A big thank you to as a key contributor in support of our bowlers and the sport of Lawn Bowls.

The group stage of the tournament has already been drawn with the Island playing a mix of different nations in each of the disciplines as highlighted below:-
