A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the Prestwick Carers Group today. 💙

It was a wonderful session, with self-care right at the top of the agenda. We never tire of promoting the importance of self-care within caring roles. When so much of your time and energy is focused on supporting someone else, it can be all too easy to put your own needs to one side. But taking time for yourself isn’t selfish, it can help protect your wellbeing, reduce stress, restore energy and give you the space you need to keep going.

Sometimes self-care is about the small things: taking a break, enjoying a cuppa, getting outside, connecting with others, or simply giving yourself permission to rest.

Thank you to everyone who came along, shared, listened and supported one another today. It was lovely to see you all. 💙

💙 Welcome to the team, Katie! 💙

We’re delighted to welcome Katie, our new Young Carers Support Officer to the team! Katie has already been busy over the last number of weeks supporting young carers and their families across South Ayrshire.

As the new term gets underway, Katie will be spending time in Prestwick Academy, Ayr Academy, Marr College, Kyle Academy and Belmont Academy, as well as the cluster primary schools linked to these areas.

Katie is really looking forward to getting out and about, meeting pupils, families and school staff and continuing to make sure young carers across South Ayrshire feel supported, recognised and connected. 🫶

The Prestwick Carers Group meet this Wednesday 10-11:30am at the 65 Club, Main St, Prestwick.

The group hope to decide on making an application to the Locality Planning Partnership Fund as a part of this session. The fund has previously significantly supported the groups development and provided a range of wellbeing activities as well as group outings. It would be great to collect some feedback and gain a consensus as a group prior to submitting ahead of Fridays submission date. 🫶

📢 Job Opportunity: Hospital Carer Support Officer

Our partners at Carers Gateway South Ayrshire are recruiting a Hospital Carer Support Officer (0.6 FTE / 21 hours per week) to help ensure unpaid carers are recognised, heard and supported when someone they care for leaves hospital.

This exciting role will be based primarily at University Hospital Ayr, working alongside hospital teams, discharge services and community partners to identify carers early, provide information and support, and help ensure they are involved in discharge planning.

💷 Salary: £16,117.80 per annum (21 hours per week)

The successful candidate will have experience in health or social care, strong communication skills, and a commitment to supporting unpaid carers through what can be a challenging time.

Going back to school can be exciting, but if you’re a young carer, it can also bring extra worries. You might be thinking about homework, seeing your friends and getting used to your school routine again, while also thinking about the person you care for at home.

Our Young Carers Team is here to help. 🌟

We have Young Carers staff based in all the academies across South Ayrshire and we can also visit you at your primary school. If you would like to speak to someone, you can just ask your Young Carers School Champion to arrange a time for you to meet with us.

There are lots of ways we can support you and your family, including:
💬 Having someone to talk to about your caring role
🏫 Helping you with things that might be difficult at school
👨‍👩‍👧 Supporting you and your family to find the right help
🎨 Giving you the chance to meet and have fun with other young carers
⚽ Helping you take a break from caring through an activity, session or something that gives you time to relax and just be you

Being a young carer can mean doing lots of important things for someone you care about but you deserve time for yourself too. 💙

A huge thank you and good luck to Molly from everyone here at Carers Gateway South Ayrshire 💙

Molly first joined us back in January as a Social Work student and after completing her placement, we were delighted that she chose to stay on with us as a sessional worker right up until the start of her next placement.

During her time with us, both as a student and as part of the team, Molly has supported countless unpaid carers across South Ayrshire with kindness, compassion and dedication. She has been a valued member of the Carers Gateway team and we know the difference she has made will be appreciated by many.

As Molly now heads off to begin her next placement, we want to wish her every success for the future. We’re sure she’ll continue to make a positive difference and voicing for unpaid carers rights wherever she goes.

Thank you for everything, Molly, it’s been a pleasure having you as part of the team and we’ll miss you! 💐💙

📢 Champions Board Update

Due to Unity Day falling on the 28th of August , the next Champions Board Meeting will take place on Friday 25th September.

Before then however, we’ll be holding a catch-up for members on Friday 4th September, from 1–3pm. (Details to follow) This will be a relaxed opportunity to catch up, share updates and discuss the progress being made across the Champions group ahead of the next Board Meeting.
