💙 A McAlister hatrick doesn’t get us all 3 points as it ends in a 4-3 defeat at Paddys Park. An end to end game with plenty of action as our girls had their last home game of the season.

Ballymoney United Ladies FC wishes to express its disappointment regarding the handling of our championship fixture vs St James Swifts on Wednesday 29th July.

As a club, we do not make public statements lightly. Since our formation almost eight years ago, we have worked tirelessly to grow, develop and establish ourselves within the women’s game. Through the commitment of our players, volunteers, coaches, committee members and supporters, we have earned promotion and are now competing in only our second Championship season, continuing to establish ourselves at one of the highest levels of women’s football in Northern Ireland.

We fully appreciate the pressures placed on local facilities and understand that scheduling conflicts can arise. We also fully support the SuperCup NI and recognise the significant positive impact it brings to our local area, providing opportunities for young players, attracting visitors and creating a fantastic event for the community. However, the success of such a prestigious tournament should not come at the expense of local clubs, whose players, volunteers and supporters dedicate themselves throughout the year to developing football within our own community.

Our concerns relate not only to the facilities provided, but also to the communication and planning leading up to the fixture.

Our home fixture was moved from our designated home ground in Dervock to Riada without Ballymoney United Ladies FC being informed. At no stage were we consulted or formally notified of this significant change. Instead, we discovered it ourselves. A club should never have to find out through its own enquiries that its home fixture has been relocated. This lack of communication created unnecessary uncertainty for our players, coaching staff, volunteers and the visiting team, and falls well below the standard of communication clubs should reasonably expect when preparing for a Championship fixture.

Prior to the fixture, we were given assurances that appropriate changing facilities would be available for both teams. However, approximately 90 minutes before kick-off, we were informed that these facilities would no longer be accessible.

Instead, our players were expected to change in a room containing CCTV cameras, with no toilet facilities and minimal privacy. Some players were forced to change in their vehicles, while the visiting team were accommodated elsewhere. This was an extremely disappointing and embarrassing situation for everyone involved.

Ballymoney United Ladies FC would like to sincerely apologise to both our own players, the parents of our younger players, and the opposing team for being placed in this position. Our players, staff and opponents deserved better. No team should have to experience circumstances where their dignity, comfort and basic welfare are compromised before taking part in a competitive fixture.

Of even greater concern are the safeguarding implications arising from these circumstances. Our club includes players under the age of 18, and every organisation involved in delivering football has a responsibility to ensure appropriate safeguarding standards are upheld. Expecting underage players to change in unsuitable facilities, without appropriate privacy, access to toilets or suitable changing accommodation, raises serious welfare concerns that should never arise at an organised league fixture. Safeguarding cannot simply be cited as a reason for operational decisions - it must be consistently reflected in the facilities and environment provided for players.

This statement is not about seeking preferential treatment. It is about ensuring that women’s football receives the same level of planning, communication and respect afforded to any other team using local facilities. Access to appropriate changing facilities is not a luxury - it is a fundamental requirement for player welfare, dignity and the professional delivery of football.

We would also like to acknowledge that many council staff and elected representatives have supported Ballymoney United Ladies FC over the years, and we appreciate those positive working relationships. Our concerns are directed at the handling of this particular situation and the wider issues it highlights, not at every individual involved.

Women’s football continues to grow at every level. Our players deserve to be treated with respect. Our volunteers deserve clear communication. Our young players deserve environments where their welfare and safeguarding are placed at the centre of every decision.

We hope this situation prompts constructive discussion and meaningful improvements so that no club, player or volunteer experiences similar circumstances in the future.

Women’s football is growing, our players matter, and the commitment and sacrifice that goes into running a club like ours deserves to be recognised and respected.

Firsts Result ✍🏻

Tonight the Toon hosted St James Swifts in their second match of the week. Looking to bounce back from the cup defeat on Monday night.

The Toon started off very strong with positive attack play and creating loads of chances. 23 minutes in the deadlock was broke when Keeley played a great corner in for Abby to slot it into the bottom corner. The Toon didn’t stop there when 7 minutes later Keeley got a well deserved goal to make it 2-0 to the Toon.

The Toon continued to play strong adding a 3rd to the tally right before half time with Naoimhe playing a great ball across for Abby to get her second of the night and to go in 3-0 up at half time.

Not long into the second half St James Swifts got awarded a penalty which goalkeeper Kaya was very unlucky not to get but the took kept up the good performance with great defensive play to see out the game 3-1 and take the 3 points home. 💙

🏆 POTM - Holly Johnson, with a great performance at the back battling strong👏🏻 and good to see her back in the team after a spell out with an injury.
