Our first surf camp of the Autumn went down last weekend and it was mega!!!

Northumberland was feeling positively tropical (most of the time)… ☀️

We were joined by an epic crew - a mixture of returning and brand new NE Surf Campahs.

This snap was taken before our very first surf of the camp at Bamburgh.

Stoke levels were high, particularly amongst the returners. Maybe a little bit of apprehension from the newbies… which would be very swiftly washed away.

This is Eve.

It was Eve’s first time surfing with us and her surfing goal for the weekend was simple: catch a green wave and ride it in.

SMASHED IT!!! 💥

We’re looking forward to seeing Eve for some private lessons again over the next few weeks - we think she may have caught the NE Surf bug.

This is Mark. 70 years young. First ever surf camp.

Mark wants to learn to surf so that he can surf with his grandson when he visits him in South Australia.

His goal was simple - ride a wave in standing up.

And he only went and bloody did it!!! Multiple times.

Mucho stoke. 🤙

Unfortunately, the particularly contagious NE Surf bug seems to have struck Mark too, and he’s already planning on returning for more surf camps with us next year.

Talking of returners…

We were absolutely THRILLED to have the amazingly talented, kind, funny, frothy, surfy yoga teacher David from SHORE delivering the yoga, breathwork and surf mobility over the weekend.

David and Nicola started SHORE around the same time that we started NE Surf, 6 years ago.

The first retreat day any of us ran was actually together, when we teamed up for a surf and yoga retreat day in Bamburgh 5 years ago.

We’ve been meaning to do something together ever since.

But we’ve both been kinda busy…

Mark our words, it won’t take another 5 years for the next one to happen.

And if you look closely at our van, you’ll find a Shore Yoga sticker which David sneakily stuck on there years ago.

To complement the surfing, yoga and the usual FROTHY business, we obviously had tonnes of insightful surf coaching and video analysis going on too.

WHAT. A. SUMMER.

We can’t thank everyone enough.

Our coaches. Our volunteers. Our funders. Our partners. And all of our totally epic surfers, whether it be through a funded or private session, groms or grown ups. You’ve all been just the besttttttt and we’re so stoked on your stoke.

Thanks for trusting us and surfing with us.

Here’s a little video of one of our HAF SEN surf camp days. We do SEN sessions privately outside of the holidays, and through the summer we received funding to increase our provision and provide the most delicious packed lunch from .northumberland.

As you can see, the sessions make SUCH a difference (just look at the stoke 🥹). We were suuuuper stoked that they came along to film us on this fine fine surf filled summer day in Bamburgh.

This session was just wonderful. 🌊❤️

Today was Theo’s first ever time in the sea. We had the privilege of learning a little about Theo’s story and his very rare condition, and, as with every adaptive session, we had to get creative to work out what would give him the best possible surfing experience.

Theo doesn’t communicate through speech and has limited control over his limbs, so we decided this was a job for Emily’s hip flexors of steel.

Being supported was the best way to help Theo stay upright and see everything around him, especially as he’s a bit of a wriggler!

With adaptive surfing there’s never any way of knowing exactly how someone is going to respond to the experience. When a surfer communicates differently, that can add an extra layer to figuring out what they’re enjoying and what’s working for them.

But oh my goodness!!!

That smile. Every. Single. Time. He caught a wave, his face absolutely BEAMED - there was no question over how stoked he was! 🥹🌊

What a special session. We can’t wait for more! Next time, he might even bring his twin along to show him how it’s done! 🤙

This session was part of our HAF funded SEN camps today. Thanks to Northumberland County Council for giving us the flexibility to arrange groups and session lengths to suit surfers with individual needs. It’s made a HUGE difference this summer.

A huge thank you also to the family and friends of adaptive surfer Prunella, whose generous donation in her memory allows us to bring additional coaches into our adaptive sessions. This helps us keep our sessions accessible and affordable, while still providing the level of support each surfer needs. ❤️

JP came to us after discovering surfing a little later in life. Fast forward a year and he’s become such a huge part of our community!

The best part isn’t just how much his surfing has come on.

It’s the new dawnie buddies, carpark craic, shared meals, the encouragement in the water and seeing someone go from finding their feet to becoming a huge part of our special little surf community.

Thanks for being an absolute legend, JP. ❤️
