Banbury Mountaineering Club is a mountaineering club based in Banbury Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, which was established in the mid 1960’s. We are a small group of like-minded people who focus spending time in the great outdoors. We are open to all and encourage those around the Banbury area to join and participate in local events with other club members. We have a wide range of experience within
the club and a great social calendar that complements the great outdoors. Meets
Tuesday – Wednesdays - Thursday
The Pinnacle Northampton, leaving Banbury around 7pm, finishes around 10pm, with a visit to the pub afterwards for those that like that sort of thing (most of us do).If you are interested, you can either car share with whoever is going (let us know the night before) or meet there. It tends to be a late night if you take the car share option (back in Banbury about 11:30). Fridays
White Horse Pub, Banbury 21:30pm till closing, not climbing, but still fun. Sundays
During winter months we climb indoors, usually Milton Keynes, Bond Leaving Banbury around 1pm, climb until 7pm and kebab / pizza afterwards getting back to Banbury around 8:30pm, again car share, meet us there and come home early if you like. During the warmer months we tend to venture outside on to real rock, locations vary depending on weather. Tours
Going as a group means the trips costs less, sharing transport costs and accommodation. You’ll be also sharing experiences with others, that have knowledge of local areas and various disciplines you’ll find having adventurous trips abroad more fun and cheaper. We do other stuff outside in the UK and abroad but that tends to be on an ad hoc basis, we tend to use the pub meets to plan trips and create events in the Facebook Group. We have visited Gower, Pembrokeshire, Peaks, Wales, Scotland, Spain, Greece, Norway, Italy
We aim for Costa Blanca region in early October for Sport Climbing, Greece destinations around late October to early November. March sees the club going off to El Chorro, Spain for some warmer climbing. Winter months some of the club will venture over to Cogne for some ice climbing in the Aosta valley, trips to Scotland to venture in the snow. We charge £5 annual fee, which goes towards equipment costs, ropes, helmets, etc. paid at our AGM/Curry night held in the White Horse, Banbury any time between February and December
Last weekend saw the Banbury boys (and girls) join forces with West Brom, Bromsgrove and Redditch climbing clubs to visit the Gower for some sea cliff climbing. Lovely long weekend with a mix of activities from climbing, flying, bodyboarding, swimming running and drinking. Great annual trip, meeting new folk and sharing a beer.

Jeremy and myself had a bank holiday trip over to North Wales staying at the BRMC hut at Tremadog. Wet weather prevented us climbing for the first 2 days with us venturing into the hills looking at caves and mining infrastructure. The Sunday the sun popped out and allowed us some climbing on the Tremadog crags. Great break and met members from several different clubs using the hut.

This week saw the BMC journey over to Morocco for some sunny sport climbing. 2 nights in Marrakech and loads of sport climbing in Todra Gorge region. Even managed Africa’s first via Ferrata which was a pleasant break. Staying in a serviced villa we had breakfast and evening meals provided for us. Great little place. Great trip had by all

The club had spent a long weekend discovering the beautiful Scottish countryside around Fort William. A lovely campsite and some excellent adventures were had by all. The weather only allowed us one day of climbing (at Pine Tree Crag in Glen Nevis) with a few days walking around Ben Nevis, CIC Hut, waterfall. Local beers and food assisted the group keeping up the energy levels.
Mark & Tom made good of a windless evening and were able to fly over Ben Nevis using their Power Motors, much to the enjoyment of 100’s of spectators from the on-site campsite kitchen, managing to get 2,000 ft above the summit.
Magda made her first solo summit of Ben Nevis, whilst the rest of the group climbed on the Glen crags below.
A few members ticked off their first Monroe summit on An Gearanach, which started by crossing over the river using a wire bridge and then through a waterfall to the long steep ascent to the peak. Managing to stay dry until we reached the top, when the weather decided we needed a shower so we hastily retreated to the low ground, where we decided a shallow river crossing would be quicker than waiting in line for a crossing using the wire bridge.
A brilliant club trip, with sunny and wet weather. Many laughs, camp fires and memories were made. The event shelter enabled us as a group a dry spot to cook and socialise whilst reminiscing what we had the during the day and plan for the following day.
Next club trip: Costa Brava in Spain in October.

Celebrating a few of the club members birthdays saw us setup camp at campsite in Pembrokeshire. Within a few minutes walk we were on several crags climbing. Sea kayaks from the harbour and also power motoring from the adjacent field.
We had setup a base camp which held host to around a dozen members of the Banbury club. With various groups climbing, walking and exploring the local area by land sea and air. Blessed with sunny weather we enjoyed the Jubilee extended weekend. The Bromsgrove and Redditch mountaineering club and West Brom clubs were also in attendance and shared some of the activities.
The nights were cold and windy, but the communal food and beer helped pass the evenings away. A very nice trip shared with some brilliant people and dogs. More photos to come.
