Red Rum โ the horse who brought hydrotherapy to the forefront of racehorse care ๐๐ฆ๐
Red Rumโone of the best-known examples of water-based training and rehabilitation in racing history.
Most will know his story. Red Rum was suffering from debilitating pedal osteitis, threatening his racing career. Trainer Ginger McCain turned to Southports beach and sea, exercising him on sand and in the sea to maintain fitness while reducing the concussion and loading associated with conventional gallops.
McCain famously said, โsalt water is so good for legs.โ
Hydrotherapy was nothing newโhorses had long been treated and exercised in rivers and the seaโbut Red Rum's extraordinary success going on to win the Grand National an incredible three times: 1973, 1974 and 1977 helped make the idea of using water as part of an elite racehorse's training and rehabilitation programme famous.
Interestingly, it would be more than 20 years after Red Rum's winning days before the first commercial equine hydrotherapy units began to emerge!

We askedโฆ What do you see in this horseโs L.H. movement pattern? ๐๐ฆ๐ด
What do we see? An inward arc of the left hind limb during swing phase of stride.
When assessing movement, we ask: Is it consistent? Asymmetrical? Does it change on land vs. in water?
We consider: clinical history, pain/discomfort, strength and asymmetry, conformation and compensatory movement.
In this horse, the subtle deviation is only visible in slow motion. He is fit, well and recently vet-assessed. He has mild pelvic asymmetry following a previous, fully healed injury.
Here we are seeing a functional postural asymmetry, influenced by reduced hindquarter strength and a tendency to become one-sided.
Notice the (excessive) water turbulenceโeven at < mid-level depth. He has learned to rush and pull himself forward rather than fully engage from behind, reinforcing compensatory movement patterns & potentially increasing the risk of injury.
So what do we do?
Slow it down. Maintain lowโmid water height, encourage straightness and promote hindquarter engagement.
Often, the smallest adjustments create the biggest changes. ๐
Observe. Record. Review. Reassess. Adjust. ๐
Effective rehabilitation is about responding to what the body is telling usโnot simply following a rigid plan ๐๐ฆ๐ด

Observation is everything. ๐
Itโs not just the initial assessment that mattersโcontinual reassessment, re-evaluation and appropriate adjustment are key to successful training & rehabilitation ๐๐ฆ๐ด
We continually observe, assess and document movement from all angles throughout the process.
Videos also allows us to have visual comparisons & review movement in greater detail, and sometimes slowing the footage down highlights subtle areas that arenโt always clearly visible in real time.
Look at the footfall flight of the left hind on this video. What do you see?
We will reveal on Wednesday what we see, what questions such a movement pattern raises and what we do next.
Observe. Record. Review. Reassess. Adjust. ๐ Because effective training, rehabilitation and therapy is about responding to what the body is telling usโnot simply following a rigid plan.
