In ITF Taekwon-Do, there are 24 patterns (tuls) because General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do, deliberately designed it that way to symbolise something deeper:

The 24 patterns represent 24 hours in a day (or a full lifetime).

General Choi explained that “the life of a human being, perhaps 100 years, may be considered as a day when compared with eternity. Therefore, we mortals are no more than passing through time and space within a day.”

By training in all 24 patterns, a Taekwon-Do practitioner symbolically dedicates their entire life to the art.

So the number 24 is symbolic, not arbitrary—it reflects the philosophy that a Taekwon-Do student should use their training to make good use of their limited time on earth, living with purpose, honour, and contribution.
