Afternoon tea is one of those things people save for a special occasion, and then wonder why they do not do it more often.

Three tiers of it. Finger sandwiches on the bottom, a proper spread of cakes and tarts in the middle, and scones with clotted cream and fresh strawberries on top. Pot of tea alongside, or something a bit stronger if the mood takes you.

Birthdays, catch ups with your mother, or a Tuesday that needed improving. Any excuse works.
