πŸ“° Match report:

With no game last week, Redfearns U15s were back in action this Sunday as they looked to build on their first league win of the season last time out, with a home game against Worksop Boys & Girls Club.

The two sides had already faced each other once this season with Redfearns running out comfortable winners, but this was sure to be a much closer contest.

Redfearns made the perfect start and went ahead in spectacular fashion after just five minutes. After a mis-hit clearance fell in the direction of Dylan Johnson on the right side of box, he unleashed an unstoppable 'Marco van Basten-esque' volley that flew past the Worksop goalkeeper into the far corner.

Minutes later and the home side almost doubled their lead after Dylan Johnson flew down the right before centring for Reuben Jeffries. But as he tried to cushion the ball in on his thigh, the pace of the ball took it just over the crossbar.

Against the run of play, the visitors then snatched an equaliser with a well finished strike that gave goalkeeper, Lennon Tuttle, no chance.

As the half approached the midway point, Redfearns almost regained the lead after a mis-controlled ball let Thomas Gill in. He raced through but Worksop's goalkeeper got out well to make the save and keep the scores level.

Minutes later and it was Gill again who went close. After picking the ball up on the left, he showed a great first touch before beating his man but his low shot that followed was well saved by the Worksop keepers legs.

Five minutes later saw the hosts next attempt at goal, after some good work on the left from Thomas Gill won his side a corner. Dylan Johnson swung one in which was met on the back post by Lucas Brennan, but his header went just wide.

Worksop were getting better as the half went on and with the scores still level, started to grow in confidence.

Two minutes before half-time the visitors then took a deserved lead, leaving Redfearns with work to do in the second period.

Worksop had an air of confidence about them as the second half got underway, but that only lasted seven minutes as the home side drew parity with another superb goal from Dylan Johnson. After his first effort was well saved by Worksop's goalkeeper, Johnson then chased down the rebound before finishing with an audacious back-heel that looked almost impossible to score.

Redfearns now looked a different side. Worksop's swagger had gone as the home side put the pressure on as they looked for a third goal.

As the second period neared the midway point, Cohen Langley was introduced up front, and his impact was instant. After Oliver Polcyn's through-ball played him through just right of centre, he raced into the area before sliding the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper into the bottom left corner to make it 3-2.

Minutes later and Langley was again at the centre of the action as he pounced on a loose ball in the box, but as he took it away from the keeper, he appeared to be dragged back, but the referee waved play on.

With ten minutes remaining the home side almost extended their lead but were twice denied in a matter of seconds. First it was the crossbar that denied Dylan Johnson what would've been an outstanding hat-trick, after his shot from the left cannoned off the woodwork. The rebound then fell for Oliver Polcyn but Worksop's keeper got down brilliantly to keep the ball out and his teams hopes alive.

The game threatened to boil over in the closing stages as the game got a little heated with both sides desperate to get the result.

With three minutes to go, Redfearns were presented with a golden opportunity to make the points safe when they were awarded a penalty. After Cohen Langley's flicked header played Dylan Johnson through, he was dragged back in the box to give the referee an easy decision. Thomas Gill took the resulting spot-kick which he put straight down the middle before sprinting away to celebrate in front of his fans.

Full-time: Redfearns 4-2 Worksop Boys & Girls Club

Back-to-back wins for Redfearns for the first time this season in a game where they had to show real character to come from behind in the second period.

Coach, Ray Firth, was pleased with his sides reaction at half-time, and give his thoughts following the final whistle:

"We asked the lads to step the work rate up in the second half as Worksop finished first half on top. They did exactly that and the result came. The bare minimum any team must do is to out-work their opponents. Cohen and Oli offered great impact when introduced, and DJ was excellent also. The main thing though was the three points."

Manager, Dave Mackenzie, echoed Ray's comments, as he reflected on the performance:

"Oli made a big impact second half and was unlucky not to get his goal. Cohen's contribution turned the game but DJ was back to his old self and put a great performance in and well deserved man of the match. Again, I said to them after the match, 'play as a team and you'll have a chance of beating anyone'. First ten to fifteen minutes, and second half, they did that and got the result."

Nice to end 2023 on a high as this was Redfearns U15s final league game now until January. ⚽️

πŸ“° Match report:

After last weekend's game fell foul to the weather, Redfearns U15s returned to league action this Sunday as they welcomed Bramley Sunnyside for what felt like a 'must-win' game for both sides.

Redfearns were without Cohen Langley but had Archie Lusha back to full fitness, and named him in the starting eleven.

The home side controlled the opening stages but it wasn't until the fifteenth minute when they carved out their first real opening. Caiden Gyte started the move, playing in Dylan Johnson on the right wing before Johnson crossed for Archie Lusha. He then nodded the ball back for Ellis Scargill whose shot from the edge of the box had the keeper beaten, but not the underside of the crossbar.

Aston Adcock had an effort from range that went just over before the best chance of the game so far fell to Dylan Johnson midway through the half. After Reuben Jeffries latched onto the ball on the right, he centred for Johnson but his effort was straight at the Bramley keeper.

Archie Lusha's set pieces were a constant threat throughout the first half and almost lead to a goal just before the half hour mark. His free-kick from the left side of halfway was met by Thomas Gill who rose well at the back post only to see his header go straight into the keepers arms.

The home side started the second half brightly and finally broke the deadlock eight minutes after the restart. It came from a set piece but this time it was Dimitris Glykofrydis who took it. His delivery from a central position was met by the deftest of touches from the head of Lucas Brennan which was enough to steer the ball past the Bramley goalkeeper and give Redfearns the lead.

The hosts almost doubled their lead five minutes later after Reuben Jeffries was put through, but one-on-one with keeper, he fired just wide of the right post when he looked certain to score.

Two minutes later and the same man again went close. After some good work on the left from Dylan Johnson, he then crossed for Jeffries but his outstretched volley went just over the bar. Again, the Redfearns man would've been disappointed not to find the back of the net.

Moments later though and the hosts did make it 2-0. Oliver Polcyn switched played with a long ball from the right to find Dylan Johnson in the left corner. Johnson then did brilliantly to cut back inside before firing the ball home low on his right foot.

Bramley responded well and almost replied instantly only to be denied by a superb challenge from William Darby when the visiting forward looked to be through on goal.

With fifteen minutes to go Bramley went down to ten men after a player was sin-binned for decent. This seemed to rally the visitors though and a slick counter attack almost saw them half the deficit, but goalkeeper, Lennon Tuttle, saved well from a one-on-one situation, tipping the ball round the post.

Despite not having too many saves to make, Lennon Tuttle had had a really good game and deserved a clean sheet, but with ten minutes to play, Bramley were awarded a dubious penalty which they converted to make it 2-1.

The closing moments were a little more nervy than they should've been and with Bramley's final throw of the dice, they almost snatched what would've been a real smash and grab equaliser, but were denied by a fantastic last-ditch challenge from Thomas Gill as the Bramley man was about to pull the trigger from close range. Redfearns celebrated the challenge like a goal as the referee blew for full-time.

Full-time: Redfearns 2-1 Bramley Sunnyside

Not a vintage performance but a very important result that gave Redfearns their first league win of the season.

After the game, manager, Dave Mackenzie, reiterated the importance of getting the three points:

"I said to the lads before the game that this was a must-win game, and that we'd gone away from playing as a team and had been playing more as individuals. A lot better team performance today which saw us get the result we needed. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal and the results will come."

Redfearns next league fixture comes in two weeks time when they welcome Worksop Boys and Girls Club. ⚽️

πŸ“° Match report:

After booking their place in the semi-finals of the cup last weekend, Redfearns U15s returned to action this Sunday looking to take some of their cup form into the league as they travelled to face Brunsmeer Athletic.

Redfearns were still without the injured Archie Lusha who returned to light training during the week, but Thomas Gill was available for selection again after returning from international duty.

The game got off to a fairly even start with Reuben Jeffries the first to go close for the visitors. After Dylan Johnson capitalised on a mistake at the back, he found Jeffries in the centre but his effort was dragged wide on his left foot.

The home side took the lead just before the ten minute mark after a corner from the right found its way straight into the top corner.

The away side responded well and almost drew level five minutes later. After some good work from Thomas Gill, he then found Oliver Polcyn on the right who centred for Lucas Brennan, but his effort was fired over the bar.

Midway through the first half again saw Redfearns go close after a flowing move saw Dimitris Glykofrydis find Reuben Jeffries on the right. He then found Lucas Brennan on the edge of the box but his effort again went just over the crossbar.

The visitors were growing into the game and another well worked move again saw them go close. Lucas Brennan and Dimitris Glykofrydis were again involved before the ball fell for Dylan Johnson, but his effort was smashed over the bar.

The away side were defending well and Aston Adcock was also having a very good half, showing great composure on the ball in the deeper areas.

Redfearns continued to put the pressure on but despite creating the chances, weren't testing the Brunsmeer goalkeeper.

Just before half-time, completely against the run of play, the hosts doubled their lead to go into the break 2-0 up.

The away side had a big mountain to climb now but almost halved the deficit ten minutes into the second half. After some brilliant work on the left from Reuben Jeffries, he then centred for Oliver Polcyn but the crossbar came to the home sides rescue as the score remained 2-0.

Dimitris Glykofrydis was the next man to go close for the visitors after some great battling by him on the edge of the Brunsmeer box, but his shot flashed just wide of the right post.

Redfearns were then denied by the crossbar for the second time in the game after a well delivered free-kick from Dimitris Glykofrydis was headed onto his own bar by a Brunsmeer man. The ball just would not go in!

With fifteen minutes remaining Brunsmeer made it 3-0 to as good as seal the result.

Redfearns didn't let their heads drop though and continued to push forward in search of the goal that their play had deserved, and almost got it after a flying challenge from Carson Armitage put Oliver Polcyn through on goal. He then tried to round the Brunsmeer number one but the keeper got down to save well and preserve his clean sheet.

Five minutes later and Brunsmeer's keeper was again called upon after Reuben Jeffries was found at the back post. Jeffries took a great first touch before stabbing the ball towards the top corner, but the Brunsmeer shot stopper pulled off a brilliant save at full stretch to tip the ball over.

In the final seconds the away side again went close after Dylan Johnson raced through on the left. His strike was again well saved by the Brunsmeer keeper before the rebound fell for an outstretched Oliver Polcyn, but he could only find the side netting.

Full-time: Brunsmeer Athletic 3-0 Redfearns

A much improved performance from their last league game for Redfearns who were very good for large parts of the game. It just wasn't their day in front of goal. You have to give credit to Brunsmeer too who were clinical in front of goal when they got their chances. Their goalkeeper being awarded their man of the match also tells its own story. The scoreline didn't reflect the performance, but that's football.

Manager, Dave Mackenzie, gave his thoughts on the game:

"Overall I thought it was a great team performance. We played some good football, and I thought the game plan worked spot on. Unfortunately though we couldn't get the ball in the net and that's what counts. The lads need to keep their heads up. We've had a few losses but it's not down to the teams performance. We've just not had the rub of the green."

Next up for Redfearns is a home fixture next Sunday against Abbey Lane.

πŸ“° Match report:

After suffering a heavy defeat last time out, Redfearns U15s returned to action this Sunday looking to bounce back as they made the journey to face Worksop Boys & Girls Club in a league cup quarter-final fixture.

The visitors were without Thomas Gill and Archie Lusha but welcomed new signing, Lucas Brennan, who came in to make his second debut for the club after representing Redfearns from being 5 years old through to U12s.

Redfearns made a good start and thought they'd broke the deadlock with just over 5 minutes played. After being played in, Oliver Polcyn battled his way through before forcing the ball in only for a dubious offside flag to rule it out.

A minute later and the visitors again went close after some good work in the middle of the park from Lucas Brennan. He beat his man before playing in Dylan Johnson on the left, but after rounding the onrushing keeper, his effort could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

Redfearns enjoyed the lions share of the early possession and after 25 minutes they found the breakthrough that they deserved. After winning a free-kick just inside the Worksop half, Dimitris Glykofrydis sent in a fantastic ball to the back post which was met by debutant, Lucas Brennan, who guided the ball into the far corner with a lovely cushioned volley.

A tactical switch then saw Reuben Jeffries moved onto the right and it almost paid off instantly as he beat his man out wide before delivering a superb ball in to the back post. The cross was met by Dylan Johnson who cut the ball back on the volley into the path of Oliver Polcyn whose effort just clipped the outside of the left post.

Caiden Gyte was having a really strong game and looked one of the standout players of the first half, commanding everything at the back and first to every loose ball.

A minute before half-time saw Redfearns almost double their lead after Dylan Johnson picked the ball up on left. He then showed a great burst of pace before seeing his effort blocked to win his side a corner. From the resulting set piece the visitors did make it 2-0. It was Johnson himself who took the corner which was met by William Darby. His first header hit the bar but Darby showed great reactions to head in the rebound to put the away side in a commanding position heading into the interval.

It felt like the next goal had to come from Worksop if they were going to get themselves back into the tie but 8 minutes into the second half saw Redfearns extend their lead and again it was debutant, Lucas Brennan. Like his first, it came from a free-kick, but this time it was Brennan himself who took it. From a central position, around 25 yards out, he unleashed a great effort which flew into the top left corner to make it 3-0 and put Redfearns in complete control.

Worksop responded and almost pulled one straight back from a free-kick of their own, but Lennon Tuttle was equal to it, tipping it over with a good save.

The away side were now looking full of confidence going forward and scored again a minute later. After being played through, Cohen Langley saw his first effort saved before his second strike hit the crossbar, but as the ball rebounded out, Dimitris Glykofrydis was there to follow up, slotting the ball coolly into the bottom right corner for 4-0.

With 10 minutes remaining Redfearns made it 5-0 after some good work on the left from Reuben Jeffries. He beat his man before centring from the byline for Oliver Polcyn who finished well to make it 2 goals from 2 games for him.

Worksop did manage a consolation goal with the last kick of the game which was harsh on the visiting backline who had been absolutely superb all game. This was Redfearns day though who booked their place in the semi-finals in style.

Full-time: Worksop Boys & Girls Club 1-5 Redfearns

A brilliant response and much needed confidence booster for Redfearns after the disappointment of their last game.

Manager, Dave Mackenzie, gave his thoughts after the game:

"A great overall team performance today. We worked as a team, battled for each other and played some really good football at times. Caiden did a great job filling in at centre back for the absent Tom, and up until him coming off was man of the match. Another contender was debutant, Lucas, who played a great game in midfield, breaking up play, spreading the ball out left and right and came up with two goals including a beauty free-kick. Midfield duo Ellis and Dimi putting in a shift, Dimi with some great deliveries from set pieces, and DJ and Reuben none stop running. This week's man of the match though goes to Will. Great battle with their number 10 I think it was, and was at it all game, and managed to keep his head, and got a goal at the right time before the break."

Redfearns will now face Thorncliffe Villa in the semi-finals in March. ⚽️
