💙 THE REALITY OF RUNNING A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS 💙

I don’t normally write posts like this, but sometimes I think people need to see the other side.

When you walk through the doors of a small family-run business, you see the lights on, the music playing, the children running around and the staff serving you.
What you don’t see is everything that happens behind those doors.

You don’t see the bills.

You don’t see the wages.

You don’t see the rent, insurance, electricity, repairs, maintenance, stock and everything else that has to be paid whether we have 100 customers or 5.

You don’t see the constant pressure of trying to keep up with what children want.

A new trend comes along — we try to bring it in.

Children want something new — we try to provide it.

Something gets broken or damaged — we replace it.

Something becomes outdated — we spend more money trying to keep things fresh.

And then there are the things that no business owner ever expects to have to deal with.

Arguments between separated parents at children’s parties.

Customers becoming upset because a character isn’t the height, shape or size they expected them to be.

Complaints because something isn’t exactly as someone imagined it would be.

And the expectation that we should simply stay open for hours, even when there have been only a handful of customers all day.

But staying open isn’t free.

Every extra hour means staff wages, electricity, heating, insurance and other running costs.

At some point, a small business has to make the difficult decision that staying open is no longer financially viable.

That doesn’t mean we don’t care.

It doesn’t mean we don’t want customers.

It means we are trying to keep a business alive.

And then there is something that can be genuinely devastating to a small business…

⭐ A negative Google review. ⭐

For a large company, one negative review might disappear amongst thousands.

For a small family business, it can be the difference between someone choosing to walk through our doors or going somewhere else.

And what hurts most is when a negative review is left without anyone speaking to us first.

I am the owner.

If you have a genuine complaint, I will listen.

If we’ve got something wrong, tell me.

If there is something we can improve, tell me.

Give us the opportunity to explain, apologise or put things right.

Because behind that Google review isn’t a faceless corporation.

It’s someone’s livelihood.

It’s someone’s mortgage.

It’s someone’s family.

It’s someone’s years of hard work.

It’s staff whose jobs depend on the business surviving.

And ultimately, when enough small businesses can no longer survive, they close.

The doors shut.

The lights go off.

The building becomes empty.

And eventually, places that were once full of children, families, laughter and life become another empty or derelict building.

That is the reality we are facing.

Small businesses cannot continue to absorb endless rising costs, constant damage, unrealistic expectations and the impact of public criticism while being expected to somehow keep everything going.

We don’t expect everyone to love everything we do.

We don’t expect everyone to agree with every decision.

But we do ask for understanding, kindness and communication.

Before leaving that negative review…

📩 Speak to us.

Before assuming something…

💬 Ask us.

Before judging a decision…

❤️ Remember there is a reason behind it.

We are doing our absolute best to keep our doors open.

Not because it’s easy.

Not because we’re making a fortune.

But because we genuinely care about the children, the families, our staff and the community we’ve built.

Please don’t underestimate how important your support is to a small family business.

Because one day, if enough of us disappear, there won’t be anywhere left to say “Let’s support local.”

There will simply be empty buildings where small businesses used to be. 💙

Please support small. Please shop local. And most importantly, please remember there are real people behind every small business.
