What a weekend of cricket for our youngest Monks! π
Monk Bretton were proud to host Saturdayβs tournament, welcoming teams from across the North Division. With four pitches marked out, it was always set to be a busy but enjoyable morning and it certainly didnβt disappoint.
Both Monk Bretton A and B teams showcased their talent brilliantly. The A team took home three wins, batting and bowling with real confidence throughout the tournament. Just as pleasing was their discipline, with only three wides and no-balls in the first game across all eight overs - a fantastic achievement at this age group.
Our B team also put in a tremendous effort with both the bat and the ball, continuing to close the gap in the games they lost and celebrating a well-earned win in their opening game. Across the morning, our youngest Monks also halved the number of wides and no-balls from previous games, which is something to be hugely proud of and shows just how much they are developing.
A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who work tirelessly around the club to make days like this possible.
Thanks also to all the visiting teams for making the early start and helping us clear the ground by just after 11am.
Most of all, thank you to all the children, who were an absolute pleasure and a joy to watch. ππ

Captain Jude led the team in Monk Bretton U11s' first cup fixture of the season against Houghton, who elected to bat first.
Opening bowlers Jude and William C set the tone brilliantly, bowling with accuracy and confidence to put the hosts under early pressure. Rosie and William M then kept Monk Bretton firmly on track, producing some pinpoint bowling and maintaining tight control of the run rate.
Making his debut behind the stumps, Finley impressed with the gloves, conceding just a single bye in an excellent first outing as wicketkeeper.
Rory and Finley then bowled well against two strong Houghton batters, while captain Jude took over wicketkeeping duties and also performed exceptionally against Monk Brettons fast bowlers.
Harry and Thomas followed with a spell full of pace and aggression, claiming some key wickets and ensuring Houghton were restricted to a competitive but chaseable total.
With a good score to hunt down, Monk Bretton knew a strong start would be crucial. Jude and Harry laid the foundations perfectly, combining sensible batting with some excellent shots around the ground.
Finley and Rosie then kept the scoreboard moving with outstanding running between the wickets, before William C and Rory built a valuable lead through mature and composed batting.
William M and Thomas guided the team home to complete the victory. Thomas, having adopted an Ian Bell-inspired approach this week, played a series of beautiful cover drives that were a pleasure to watch.
The win was thoroughly deserved, with Monk Bretton playing with confidence and composure throughout a fantastic team performance.
A special mention must go to U9 superstar James, who guested for Houghton and showed his class with both bat and ball.
A great evening of cricket was enjoyed by two talented sides, played in an excellent spirit from start to finish.
