Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy

We're back open now after our annual summer closure. I had a great holiday and lots of active rest.

I wanted to do a shout out to Ocean Turtle in Basingstoke, (https://www.oceanturtlediving.com) who are just down the road from us. I popped in there to buy a new mask and fins for some snorkelling in Kimmeridge Bay.

I came out with those, plus a three day Scuba Diving trip to their location in Spain -

I arrived from the Airport on the Friday has time to put my stuff in my room and grab my swim gear to head to the Dive School.

I'm a later starter to Diving, having only started in March, whilst on holiday with Sensei Ollie. So this was part refresher but mainly learning new skills.

Kerrie who is a Platinum Course Director (She's the Head Sensei) and I had a chat about what I wanted to cover as part of the qualification and what my elective subjects were going to be.

I had a couple of fun dives on the Friday afternoon, before getting down to work on Saturday with four dives and a couple on Sunday.

If you're looking to get into diving, this is a great place, she and her co-owner, Edwin, gave very clear and concise instructions and where necessary, as I'd neglected some of the fundamentals (Kihon) on a dive, I was admonished. It was hardwork, but with her encouragement, directed feedback, answering my endless questions and watching/copying her I made some really good progress and also ended up with my next level Dive Qualification.

It was also interesting that she corrected a couple of what I hadn't seen as issues because I was taught a certain way previously. One a major one, that made a massive difference to how well I could dive and the other affecting the longevity of each dive. We chatted about coaching Scuba Diving and Martial Arts and came to the conclusion that they're both the same, it's all about the fundamental skills being taught correctly.

I saw loads of fish and Octopus. Swam in a shoal of 100+ Barracuda and ended up diving for 20 minutes with a shoal of about 50 Rainbow Wrasse all around me, apparently I'm the King of the Rainbow Wrasse, they must have liked the T Shirt I wore.

Introducing... Beyond the Belt Life Skills - Powered by Shin Gi Tai.

Monthly life skill topics are back with a bang! And this time everything you read is done by our team and coaches. We have stories from the academy and challenges directly from your coaches!

This month's topic is Courage. We'll tell you what it means to have courage and why it is important in all aspects of life!

Each child will get a August workbook which we'd love for them to work through and then recap with their coaches.

Gradings are an important part of your martial arts journey. It gives you goals to look towards and also gives you a great indication of your growth.

This is how we do our gradings. Everyone's journeys are different but if you attend twice a week for 5 years, you'd be looking at gaining your black belt.

Our gradings are held in March, June, September and December. Our next grading weekend is the 26/27 of September. Ask your coaches what you need to do to make sure you're nominated to grade.

Last weekend, the Shin Gi Tai competition team attended both the junior and the adult national light sanda tournament.

It was an amazing weekend, where we achieved our best ever results, and topped the medal tables. We had 18 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 2 bronze medals!
In the junior tournament we had 26 wins, with 8 losses (4 matches were against ourselves, so 22 wins and 4 losses against other clubs!) and in the adults tournament we had 2 wins and 1 loss!

We are extremely proud of the effort put in by every member of the competition team, and sorry for those who couldn’t be there to celebrate with them. We owe a big thank you to all of the grown ups who bring all of the juniors to the competition sessions, and for being such a great supporting team on the day, and another thank you to the BCCMA for running a great tournament, finding opportunities for all of our fighters.
