One exercise doesn't prevent ACL injuries, but exposing athletes to single-leg balance under external challenge can help develop qualities that transfer to football.
In this drill, the athlete has to:
• React to an unpredictable ball return
• Control a single-leg stance
• Improve proprioception (joint awareness)
• Maintain trunk and hip stability while performing a football-specific skill
The literature supports this.
•Fatigue increases injury risk, leading to greater knee valgus (knee collapsing inwards), increased hip and knee internal rotation, and higher ground reaction forces-all factors associated with ACL injury risk.
•Trunk and hip stability play a major role in controlling knee position. Better control of the trunk and hips improves movement mechanics and can reduce excessive frontal plane knee motion.
• Neuromuscular training—including balance work, single-leg stability exercises, proprioceptive training, plyometrics and agility drills-is a core component of successful ACL injury prevention programmes.
• Starting these types of neuromuscular programmes at a younger age has also been associated with fewer ACL injuries compared with beginning later.
That said, a BOSU ball isn't a replacement for:
* Progressive strength training
* Plyometrics
* Sprinting
* Deceleration mechanics
* Change of direction training
It's simply one piece of a much bigger puzzle.

Who Am I?
My name is Miles Obodo, founder of MBODOPERFORMANCE.
I have competed in elite football for the past three years, making my EFL debut for Swindon Town at just 16 years old before signing my first professional contract with Reading FC in August 2025. I now compete in the National League South (Step 2) with Farnham Town FC, continuing my journey in the men's game.
Throughout my career, I have experienced what it takes to reach Category One Academy football and perform in a professional environment. My goal is to pass that knowledge, experience and winning mindset on to the next generation.
At MBODOPERFORMANCE, 1 provide high-quality 1-to-1 coaching for boys and girls aged 5+, with every session tailored to the player's age, position and individual goals.
Whether your aim is to build confidence, improve technical ability or progress towards academy football, every session is designed to challenge, develop and maximise your potential.
I'm still pursuing my own career in the professional game, and I bring the same professionalism, work ethic and ambition into every coaching session. My mission is simple: to help every player become the best footballer they can be.
