The Battle of Bourtange is an annual event. This year, the fortress will be fully renovated to reflect the Eighty Years’ War.
The faithfully reconstructed fortifications will provide the backdrop for a first-class historical spectacle.
In 1640 the Spanish troops took the fortress, but the Dutch planned to recapture it.

You can see firsthand whether they succeed: numerous soldiers from centuries past will attempt to reenact the story as faithfully as possible.
Besides spectacular battles around the fort, you can also get a glimpse into daily life at that time.
Visit an original warehouse, admire the spectacles and battles, or stroll through a market from bygone eras. Experience the atmosphere of the 17th century in the Bourtange fortress.

Enjoy a weekend of family fun and activities from bouncy castles, cake stalls and of course living history and skirmish.

We Want You!!! 🫵🏻 There are many roles within our regiment and we are particularly interested in filling these positions: 🖤Pike: you will be in the thick of the action, as a combatant you will need strength and stamina. Training is provided, and you will learn postures and order. ❤️Musket: as a new recruit you will be fully trained on how to handle a firearm. Training will involve postures, orders and how to load your weapon. You must have a full fi****ms license, and certification to use black powder, before you can fire on field ( a test is mandatory) 🖤Drummer: no experience needed, all training is provided and we have drums to use ASAP. You have a very important role, in relaying Commanding Officers orders. ❤️Baggage: also known as water carriers. This is a non combatant role, it is a VITAL role for every member on the fields. Providing hydration, fixing helmets, tying laces and assisting in any injuries. If you are interested, in any role or popping along to our next event. Our first Major Muster this year 🙌🏻

This weekend!!

A full day of interactive history for all the family, 3rd & 4th of May 2026!

Watch and experience first-hand the thrill and excitement of large musket volleys, pike engagements, with drums and colours, and the full panoply of the 17th Century. Soldiers and civilians demonstrate life during this turbulent period of history.

Members of the Sealed Knot will create a re-enactment of fictional encounters between elements of Parliamentary and local Royalist forces, with the finale each day being a battle involving hundreds of seventeenth century soldiers with accompanying cannon fire and cavalry charges.

Our Living History encampment and activities tent will be open throughout the day and will give a close-up portrayal of life in the 17th Century and allow interaction between the public and re-enactors to both entertain and educate.

The Society and event organisers will showcase Local and National Heritage in a dedicated Heritage Zone. Visitors can meet heritage organisations, societies, and visitor attractions, showcasing the county’s rich diversity of history and heritage. Food and Drink will also be on public sale.
